I'm so sad I worked it out to about 71 days after the census before she gives birth....you'd think she'd stay close to home but she's preggie with someone else's child and still married to Peters who seems to be a bit of a loose cannon.

When Jessie has her next child in 1873 (my GGmother) she has her in Tayport but she never lived in Tayport and the marriage listed is just fiction. Mind they must have had good memories because when Alexander comes along in 1881 they give the same date for the fictional marriage on his birth certificate- August 26th 1870!

I'm less concerned to find Alexander as he was working on his father-in-law's farm in 1861 so if he's working away again it's not unusual. I thought they might have flitted down to London (Jessie has two brothers Joseph and John Robertson living in Lambeth) but came up empty handed there too.

Hello jennywren001
Ancestry seems to have missed Cupar, Fife out on the 1871 Census transcriptions. If Jessie gave birth in Cupar, June 1871, she may have been in Cupar when the Census was taken 2/3 April. I've not found any of my relatives on 1871 Cupar Census on Ancestry. I've found some on ScotlandsPeople but I've known exact names and ages and usually the name of a second person. Might be a bit harder with Jessie! She is a Domestic Servant on BC so could she have been living with the family she worked for?
     Good luck with your search.
               Regards,     Dod.

That is good to know, Dod  :)

Just playing around on SP general searches...looking for a Jessie aged between 28-34...

No entries with surname starting Ful* or Coc*

No entries for Peter* but one for a 32yr old Jessie Petrie.

Also, one entry for a 30yr old Jessie Scott.

Just using all the surname options you have mentioned, Jen.

Monica

PS: Checked for Alexander Cochrane in Cupar for 1871 on SP just in case that is where he was hiding, but, alas not!

Thanks Dod,
On FindMyPast I put in Bonnygate, Cupar for 1871 and 473 people showed up. Of those 138 are born 1838 (+/- 10 years) - I've looked through those without success. I've no way of knowing if the 473 are all the people living in/on Bonnygate or some of those are missing.

Monica thanks for looking - I think the Jessie Scott is the one with husband Thomas and son John - living Dundee.  My head is spinning looking at J*  Cochran(e)

I've gone back and compared Alexander Cochranes in 61 and 71 - I'm pretty sure the chap (Alexander Cochran) at North Powrie, Murroes, Forfarshire age 58, born Clunie (Alexander and Janet were married 1829 in Clunie) working as an agricultural labourer for the Ogilvies is a good contender. Murroes is only about 3 miles from Dundee.

Jen, my searches for 1871 on SP were just in Cupar, Fife....picking up on Dod's comments about potential problems on a/try and imaging for this place. So the Jessie Scott is in Cupar, Fife not the Dundee one. No clue at all if this is connected to your Jessie though  :-\

Monica, I've had a look at the Jessie Scott in Cupar - she's with an Alexander but it's her 29 year old husband. I've attached a picture of Jessie looking like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.  :)

She looks a gentle lamb, Jen! Not her fault first hubby John Peters was tricky lad, from what GR2 mentioned earlier  ::)

Odds on this? Until I found John Peters' death certificate a few days I'd never heard of Comrie in Perthshire. Yesterday I had a wee look at Andrew Melville the minister that 'A' Jessie Cochrane is servant to in 1871...I followed him (not easy as using initials not full names on the census) through to 1901 and guess where he's living - Comrie!

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to write this branch up at the moment and wonder if anyone could have a look at a census entry for a Jessie Peters, servant, born 1845, living Nethergate in Dundee, with the Whitton family in 1871. F&M&P has her place of birth transcribed as Kirriemuir - clutching at straws thinking it might not be Kirrie. If it is Kirrie then I'll have to let this 1871 Jessie obsession go as I think I've looked at way too many census entries in this search!

The good news is while exploring ways to find her I've now got the marriages for all Jessie's siblings.  Her brothers John and William marry Paterson sisters from St Andrews in Fife but the real surprise was her brother Alexander, he married a Margaret Fullerton in Old Machar in 1868 :o. Margaret's father is a John Fullerton (builder) - brother to Alexander Fullerton who is the father of William Fullerton - Jessie's future husband/partner. Thanks to suggestions from fellow enthusiasts here at Rootschat I already had John's 1811 OPR birth as we used it to try and establish Alexander Fullerton's grandparents - talk about connections.....
