1841 census - where is Ann Foulston?
« on: Saturday 20 December 14 15:28 GMT (UK) »
In 1845 Ann Foulston married John Hayter in Paddington. Her father was Charles Hayter smith [not marked as deceased but that doesn't mean he hadn't died]. She stated she was living in Market Street. Witnesses were Charles Trowsdale & Eleanor Trowsdale [my 3 x g grandparents]. Eleanor had been living at Market Street when she married in 1838, father Charles a blacksmith so I am confidently assuming Ann & Eleanor were sisters.

I have just received a death certificate of Charles Hayter locksmith & bell hanger died 23 Nov 1839 at 40 Percy Street Marylebone. Informant was Ann Foulston [no relationship given  :(] of 72 Drummond Street.

I have looked for Ann in Market Street & Drummond Street in 1841 with no success. Unfortunately the writing on the census sheet scans is very faint for both streets [worst for Market Street].

I had earlier found a Charles Hayter locksmith in Robson's 1839 Trade Directory at 4 David Street Marylebone & in an 1845 directory the same or another Charles Hayter locksmith at 12a Great Chesterfield Street. This however could be Eleanor's brother Charles born 1813.

SO ..can anyone please help me find Ann Foulston in 1841? And - is it likely the 1839 death was her father? Can her first marriage to a Foulston be found? Please?

Thank you , Josey

ADDED: Charles Hayter was buried on 1 Dec 1839 in Whitefield's Memorial Church, Tottenham Court Road which was taken down and re-erected in 1890; this new building was totally destroyed by bombing on Palm Sunday 23 Mar 1945 by the last V2 to fall on London.

How old was Ann when she married or was she just "of full age" ?

Whoops sorry, forgot all that. 'Full age, widow' in 1845. She was baptised 23 Sep 1810 to Charles & Ann in Marylebone.

I have not found the first marriage but there is a burial of a William Foulston in 1835 aged 35 in Parsons Green.

Josey, still struggling to find Ann in 1841  :-\  Have you tried to find Ann in 1851, following her second marriage to John Hayter in 1845. Just wondered whether there could have been any children from her first Foulston marriage.

Only thing I can see so far is this christening entry in 1836 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3C7-1QP  No idea if connected as can't see anything else so far...

BIG leap of faith, this might be this child in 1901 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSZC-F3B !

Added:
A little more on my 'leap of faith' (struggling to see much more at this point). At the time of George James' christening in 1836, George and Ann Foulston living in Stafford Street. Father George a servant??

George James, son, and his family in:

1881 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X3R1-7W6

Big leap might have wings  :D

From 1851:

John Hayter 36 farrier (?) b. Bagshot, Surrey
Ann Hayter 40 b. Marylebone
Amelia Hayter 3 daughter b. Hampstead
George Fowlston 15  son in law (lots of meanings for this in times of old as you know) b. Marylebone
Address: 4 Northend, Hampstead

And 1861:

John Hayter 46
Ann Hayter 48
Amelia Hayter 13
John Hayter 6 son b. Hamstead
Address: 3 Garden Place, Hampstead

I think George jnr kept things in the family. His wife is Mary Ann - there is a marriage in Pancras in 1859 involving George James and possible spouse Mary Ann Hayter

That looks really promising for 1841 for young George  :) He certainly liked to use his middle name in full or just initial throughout his life....which helps a lot always!

Frances maybe a sister/other family to George Snr. perhaps? Maybe Ann Hayter working to maintain her child etc?
