Grandmother born France, how do I find the record there?
« on: Monday 22 December 14 08:37 GMT (UK) »
Real newbie so forgive errors.

From help from others on rootschat I am pretty sure my maternal Grandmother was born in France in 1875 and then baptised the following year in London.  Will I be able to find the French record of birth anywhere?

For French civil bmds you need to know the location, there is no freebmd equivalent.

If her family were British they may have also registered her birth with the British consulate, and these records can be searched on several pay sites ("overseas births") and ordered from the GRO.  They have similar (sometimes sparser) info to a normal birth certificate.

If you can let me know what info you have (occupation of father can also be a clue as to where they headed and for what reason), I can take a look for you.

Thank you for the response.  The entry on Family Search just says France.  I see if I can find the  nearest in date census and see if that shows an occupation.  More digging.

Hello David

Thank you for your response.  She was baptised in St. Pancras, London on 24 July 1876 Mary Eliza Amelia Vincent.  Father, Robert Vincent - Mother, Mary Vincent.  The baptism record also states she was born on 6th June 1875.  No place of birth mentioned.

The Census of 1881 records her birthplace as South of France.

That is all I have!?

Kind regards Braytons

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.
It's a very difficult one because the family name is also a given name.

There are VINCENTS almost everywhere

http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?nom=vincent&submit=Valider&client=cdip

and South of France is quite vague.

No idea what the maiden name of her mother was ?

Thank you David, her mother's name was Mary Yorke.  As far as I know, both mother and father were English.  I don't know why she would have been in France.  The whole family is a mystery.  It was discussed at length in a thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=715578.0 a couple of years ago and I received an great deal of help from members of this forum, but kind of ground to a halt with my research.

Kind regards Braytons
