"Dockno Hall Mills" Kendal
« on: Thursday 25 December 14 16:37 GMT (UK) »
I have just opened an 1842 death certificate wherein the informant, my 4xgt grandfather, gives his address as what appears to be "Dockno Hall Mills", Kendal. A quick google search does not come up with anything. I know this has to be a cotton mill or some such.

Anyone have any idea about it?

Thanks  :D

Dockray hall mill is shewn on old maps, on a modern map it is just north of Kendal at the point where thr railway to Windermere and the river Kent cross.

Sorry I cannot do a link to the old map on my tablet.

Mike

Edit:  it is shewn as a woollen mill

Could it be Dockray Hall mill, which was on the River Kent in Kendal, now an industrial estate. There were several mill cottages there too.  One site says it was a water mill another says a woollen mill, originally a big house.

Thanks both. The word definitely doesn't say "Dockray" but could easily be in error. George was variously described as "overseer in woollen mill" and "master of the power looms" etc.

-Edit: Just realised on the 1841, George's address was written on census as "Docker Hall Row"

1st of all there were 12 woollen mills in the Kendal area, so hard to pin one down.
There is a village of Docker near Kendal, so there could have been a mill there. There is also a Docker Hall in Docker, this is a farm.
As I originally stated Dockray Hall Mill was a woollen mill.

Just to stop any confusion there is also a Docker Park farm and a Docker Hall farm in a nearby village of Arkholme, but I think this is the wrong area.

What is his occupation in 1841?

Weaver. On 1851 he is "manager of the power looms" in Highgate, Kendal.

That's a pain Trishanne lol. The certificate does say Kendal and the 1841 census specifies "township" of Kendal as well as Parish of Kendal.
