Confusing Urwins
« on: Friday 26 December 14 18:00 GMT (UK) »
I have started researching one of my lines again to be drawn into great confusion. After puzzling at it for a while, I am baffled. Maybe a fresh pair of eyes and a fresh brain will have ideas?

My 5xgt grandparents were Thomas Urwin and Isabelle nee Heaton. They married in 1783 at St Nicholas, Durham. Their first two children, William 1783 and Thomas 1785, are christened St Giles. For whatever reason, the second two children, Mary 1788 and George 1789 are christened Catholic in Ryton in a joint christening in 1790 (the mother's maiden name was included). There is another child, Catherine born 1795 and christened 1795 Gateshead, who I was unable to attribute to another couple but who always, for some reason, troubled my gut.

Now, I have just found a burial in Lanchester for Isabel Urwin, wife of Thomas dec'd. The problem? It is in 1792. If Catherine was not the daughter of my Thomas and Isabelle, whose was she? If this Isabel is not my Isabelle, whose wife was she?
The other problem is Thomas being deceased... I can't see anything for Lancester and there is a burial in Ryton that is 1788- more than 9 months before the birth of George.

I haven't been able to find any other Thomas Urwin x Isabelle (and variants) in the right timeframe... The closest is a couple who married in something like 1803 having children in Gateshead.

 :-\

The 6 April 1792 Burial for Isabel, Widow of Thos has abode as Dipton

A Thomas Urwin was Buried 15 June 1781, All Saints, Lancaster, abode Dipton

Both on FreeREG

So as no ages shown may have been born early 1700's
So definitely another Couple I would say.

Possible Marriage;
Thos URWIN to Isal BOOSTY, 26 May 1740, Holy Cross, Ryton, Durham
(FreeREG)

Trish :)

Thanks Trish, what a pain, I thought I'd finally found her!

I would have looked on FreeREG but for some reason it wasn't working the other day.

Hi Ayashi
I too am descended from Thomas & Isabelle through William
Have you got back further?!!!!
Yes it is confusing and i was researching whether the Mary & George children were theirs!
Gone from COE to Catholic?!
Are you aware of the Urwin DNA project at http://clanirwin.org/dnastudy.php ?
Do you have a living male Urwin to take the test?
Its amazing stuff
I have a 500 year old cousin in Canada researching this as well (dna common ancestor circa 1500)
Hopefully hear from you and we can keep digging
Graeme Urwin

Hello again Graeme, we've spoken before. I'm afraid I haven't got any further back at all.

There are male Urwin descendants, however I am no longer in contact with them.

There is a Thomas Urwin burial in 1790 in Lanchester on durhamrecordsonline.com. Have you looked to see if that one might be yours?

I never told you who the descendants were and have no idea where they even live, only that one is in Northern Ireland somewhere.

I am descended from Thomas.

I believe it was on the Durham Mining Museum website that we originally spoke? We spoke by email a few times since.
