Death notice 1831 Margaret Nicol in Troon
« on: Saturday 27 December 14 00:05 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a death notice or obit for 1831. "Margaret Nicol died 14 September 1831 at Troon, and was buried 17 September in Crosbie" (Dundonald Parish register). I am almost certain this was my ggggrandmother, but no relationship was given in the Parish Register. I have not been able to find any Ayrshire newspapers online - or am I not looking in the right place?  I have access to the British Newspapers through findmypast but 1844 would seem to be the closest year they have.  Any assistance or suggestions gratefully received.

Hi Maryeliza,
I don't think you will be able to access Ayrshire newspapers for this period online unfortunately.
The Burns Monument Centre in Kilmarnock or the Ayrshire Archives at Auchincruive, Ayr will hold local newspapers or microfiche copies.
Do you think Margaret Nicol was a lady of means? I would imagine at this period 1831 only the wealthy would be able to afford a death notice in a newspaper. If she was of more modest, working class origins it's doubtful there would be an obit or death notice. Many 'ordinary' people would also be unable to read or write.
Who was your Margaret's husband ? Is he still alive at the time of 1841 Census?

Sorry if I haven't been much help  :(

Thanks for your response Looby.  It is a bit of a long shot, I know.   Her husband, John Patrick, was still alive in 1841, remarried. He was a shoemaker in Old Cumnock.  This is the only Margaret Nicol I could find (using Scotlands People, ancestry, findmypast and other sources) who died in Ayrshire between 1831 and John's remarriage in 1841, and who fits. The date of this death is only a few weeks after the birth of her last (and ninth) child.  It is possible she had gone to Troon to recuperate and probable that she had maternal relatives in the area.
Thanks again
Maryeliza

Hi again maryeliza,
Death records pre 1855 were not well kept. Churches tended to record those who had paid to hire the mortcloth  http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&1355

Chances are your ancestor Margaret Nicol/Patrick died where she lived in Old Cumnock or surrounding area and no record exists of her death  :(
Of course it could be your Margaret buried at Crosbie Cemetery.....but with no further info impossible to prove.

Looby :)

I wonder if this birth in New Cumnock is your Margaret -

Yes, thank you, it is. I have a copy of the Baptismal Register.
