Robert Charles Hotson - juvenile delinquent
« on: Saturday 27 December 14 06:36 GMT (UK) »
Robert Charles Hotson was born on 7 April 1867 in Croyden, Surrey, the son of John Robert and Emily Hotson. In 1885, a youth of the same name, aged 17, was convicted at the Old Bailey of maliciously shooting and wounding a young girl in Croyden.  The case is summarized here:

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?path=sessionsPapers%2F18850420.xml

He allegedly had told the victim that he loved her and that if she did not meet him the next day he would go to America.  He said that he was a penniless adventurer.

In fact, an Englishman named Robert Charles Hotson did immigrate to the United States in June 1886 but the passenger list gives no details of his birthplace.  He went to Cincinnati, Ohio where he married Grace Emma Chapin in June 1887.  On the 1900 census, he was recorded as born in England in April 1867.  In the United States, he became a naturalized citizen and he appears to have been a successful and law-abiding businessman.  He died in 1925 in Westminster, Maryland.

Question:  Is the immigrant Robert C. Hotson the same person as the juvenile delinquent Robert C. Hotson?

Have you looked on the census entries for UK to see if he might still be there, and also for (marriages and) deaths to see if anything matches?

This is not proof of anything, but it helps.

The delinquent is the nephew of Thomas Newell.

Do you have his birth and parents' names?

Have you found any information about 'his' marriage in the USA?

Added:
Sorry, parents info in your opening post.

A big coincidence if it is not the same person.

Hi Erato,

There is a baptism at St. John, Croydon, Surrey of Vera Dorothy Hotson on 25 Feb 1894.
Her parents were Robert Charles Hotson and Grace Emma Hotson.
Address given was 117 Waddon New Road, Croydon, Robert's occupation was Clerk.

They must have come back to England for a while  :)

Still haven't worked out how Thomas Newell fits in as his uncle.

So, in answer to your question "Is the immigrant Robert C. Hotson the same person as the juvenile delinquent Robert C. Hotson?"  I would say yes!

There is also a UK incoming passenger record for Robert (b. 1867) and Grace Hotson arriving in the UK 1st Sept 1925 from New York on board the Minnekahda.  Their intended place of residence was Croydon and his occupation was Accnt.

Robert returned to the US on the same ship departing 31st October, arriving New York 9th November 1925.  His final destination was Westminster, Md.   Birth location Croydon, occupation Accountant.  Grace is not listed on the manifest but there is a pencil note next to his name "wife 1/26"
Address of nearest UK relative 16 The Exchange, Thornton Heath, Surrey. (Thornton Heath is just 2.1/2 miles from Croydon)

Just found Grace listed as travelling back to the US on the same ship as Robert, just listed on a different page.  He only lived for a few weeks after his return to Maryland then  :'(
