Servetus and Mary Ann Ridings
« on: Saturday 27 December 14 22:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am looking into my family that lived on the Island around the 1900's.  My great grandfather was Servetus Ridings and was killed on the Ellan Vannin.  He lived at the 'Big House' South Quay, I do wonder where this was. Following his death his wife and daughters where housekeepers but I don't know where.  Any info would be great.

Cheers
B

From an inquest report:

The Coroner announced that one of the bodies was unidentified, but it was hoped to secure identification, because the victim's shirt bore the name "Bradshaw, Bury".
In August last two shirts were purchased from Mr Bradshaw at Bury by Mr J. E. Mather, of Walshaw, Bury and sent to Mr Riding, 15 South Quay, Heywood House, Douglas. Mr Riding lost his life on the "Ellan Vannin"

South Quay has been largely knocked down - maybe #15 was the Trafalgar Hotel?
I would need to check the next time I walk down that way - but I won't be back on the island until the New Year.

Cheers for all the info. I know that the daughters married and Fanny was married twice, to Mark Cleator who died and then to a chap called Broomfield who came from Liverpool, and she then left the island and lived in Liverpool.  Emily married Ernest Woolfenden  and had two children but there again I don't know what happened, there may be family still on the island. Thanks for the info about the boarding house, I do wonder if that is where they lived after Servetus had died.

If you look at Google Maps, Street View, ATS is at 5-7 South Quay.
Plumb Centre is at 18-23 South Quay.

There are a couple of houses in between - looking fairly unlived in!
I would guess that one of these is no 15? ;D
