Might anyone be able to suggest a pathway for finding the parents of Henry Madden, born c 1806 died 1886? He married Ann Ryan c 1845 and lived in Killaloe.

What religion was the family? have you searched the civil registration index for the marriage (which should list fathers' names & occupations)? if not there then was before 1845 and/or a Catholic ceremony

I did find this1826 Tithe entry which could be a relative-

1901 census for county Clare shows that all of the 135 individuals of this surname were Catholic.I would infer from this that it's likely your ancestor also Catholic.Unfortunately if from parish of Killaloe no parish records exist before 1828.

Thanks everyone - yes, Catholic and yes, it is the Henry Madden in that family tree. But trying to go back earlier than Henry to find his parents is proving difficult. I might try to find out if there was a local paper in Killaloe in the late 1800s, to see if I can locate a death notice or something similar.

Alternatively I may be able to find some descendants of those of his children who stayed in Ireland rather than going to Australia. Bridget Madden b. Abt 1847, Clare, and Patrick Madden b. Abt 1848, Clare. Their baptisms show up  in the Ogonnelloe Catholic Parish Register.

Thanks again.

Some Maddens on this link dated 1828 from Clare library

Have you tried looking for any of their burials?  Some headstones provide useful info, but bear in mind that not all graves are marked.

A death notice, if any was printed, in the local paper will probably follow the usual format for that time such as: Died at his residence, 25 November, Henry Madden, Ogonnelloe, aged 72 years. A death notice will not usally list spouse of a man, parents or other family details. Only notable locas (clergy, doctor, gentry, businessman, etc.) would have an obituary.
