William Main/ Agness Jack, Airdrie
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 20:18 GMT (UK) »
John Main, born 1827, Airdrie, was the son of William Main/ Agness Jack. He married Agnes Moffat 9Aug 1855, New Monkland. They had their children in Torpichen where he worked as a coal miner. I am trying to find the parents of William Main who would have been born about 1800-05. It appears that he died before the 1841 census. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

John Main would have been aged 13 on the date of the 1841 census.

There is a John Main, aged 12, in a household in Chapel Street, Airdrie, New Monkland in the 1841 census
Mary Jack, 60, publican
William Jack, 30 labourer
Archibald Jack, 20, labourer
Agnes Jack, 25, female servant
Mary McKinlay, 10, female servant
John Main, 12, cotton handloom weaver

Could this be your John Main? If so, it might suggest that he was illegitimate. And in that case, your chance of finding anything about his father rests on whether or not the New Monkland kirk session took an interest in the matter.

Have you seen the original of John Main's marriage certificate? How, exactly, does it record the name of his mother?

Have you seen the original of John Main's baptism? What does it say?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
