The terrace was off Icknield Port Road, Ladywood, Birmingham, and probably between Arthur Place and the Pipers Building.

Did you work this out from checking the enumerator's route?

Could you please let us know the name and other details of the people at this address.

Yes, I looked through the pages on the 1871 census and followed the route, checking it on the 1888 map (I couldn't find an earlier one).

I'm thinking it might be Alma Terrace, that you first suggested.

There is mention of an 'Alma Terrace, Icknield Port Road' in a Newspaper dated 1866, and also a baptism register dated 1886.

I have an idea what it might be.

I think a Terrace was often a row of buildings fronting a main street and containing numerous houses or tenements. If you look at the enumerator's route, he visits 17/18 Icknield Port Road, then Alma Terrace, then Piper's Building (with several families in each) then back to 26 Icknield Port Road.

So I am wondering if Alma Terrrace and Piper's Building fronted Icknield Port Road?

The description of the Enumeration District  says "From and including No 1 Icknield Port Road, to Osler Street, and including the whole of Clark Street". All these roads still exist today.

It is my suggestion that there was no such road as Alma Terrace. I will look further to see if I can gauge an approximate location of Alma Tce.

I think you might have it. I really like this idea.

I think No 1 Icknield Port Rd was at the southern end - the enumerator walked north along Icknield Port Rd, then into Clark street, so my best guess is that Alma Tce was south of Clark St.

Alma Tce came just after No 18 Icknield Port Rd, then came Piper's Buildings, then the Lamp Tavern, then Spring Place, Harris' Buildings, 46 Icknield Port Rd, before he went into Clark St.

This just gives you a rough idea of the location of Alma Tce.

You're correct in assuming Alma Terrace wasn't a road.
A typical B'ham terrace had a courtyard fronting the road with rows of houses at the back. These houses were backed by others which formed another terrace.
They were very common in the Icknield Port rd./ Monument road. area.
I think I have photos somewhere.
I have maps of B'ham going back to the mid 1500's so I'll take a look at my 1860's maps & see if I can locate it but it's probably unnamed.

Enumerator route
+ a typical terrace. Not the one I was looking for as this one is in Saltley.
