GUEST, Charles
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 10:36 GMT (UK) »
Looking for descendants of Charles Guest and Maria Turner. He was born about 1823 in Gresford, Cheshire (1851 census), married Maria Turner (b1826 Birmingham, Warwickshire) Jan 1844 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Children - John Guest b1845, Wolverton, Ellen Guest b1849 Northampton, Charles Powell Guest b1851 Northampton, Margret Guest b1854, Birmingham, Mary Anne Guest b 1856 Birmingham, William George Guest b1866, Sydney,New South Wales. The family emigrated to Australia in 1861 arriving in Melbourne Oct 1861 aboard the Elizabeth Ann Bright. Then moved to Sydney arriving Feb 1862 aboard the Montezuma.
William George Guest is my great grandfather but I would like to find out about the rest of the family. Have only found a Charles Powell Guest who married Susan Rebecca Meadley in 1873 but I am not sure if he is the right one as there are a couple with the same name.
I would appreciate any information about this family, either in Australia or the UK.

William George Guest is my great grandfather

Can you tell us a little more about your G Grandfather? His marriage and his death? Just sometimes tracking a sibling can help find the others.

John Guest supposedly died in 1918 in Geelong VIC. He is buried with his wife Martha who died in 1908.

These children all have father listed as William Geo Guest / Emily Mallan

This could be more only the mother's name is Emily Hallan father William Geo Guest

Thank you for those replies. My great grandfather, William George Guest married Emily Frances Mallan in 1886 in Richmond, Victoria. They had 8 children, Una Grace b1887 in Richmond, Emilie Eileen 1888-1947 (my grandmother) m Frederick Page, Alma Florence 1890-1964 m Albert Buckley, Ruby Estella 1893-1968 m Arthur Fleming, Gladys Olive 1896-1993 m Thomas Armstrong, Rita Lillian b1898, William George Howard 1900-1976 m Sarah Healy, Clarence Vernon, b1906 m Nita Ann Key. All the children were born in Richmond, Collingwood and North Fitzroy. According to the electoral rolls they lived in North Fitzroy and William George Guest was a confectioner and then a fireman.
I am interested in finding where William's siblings went in Australia - there are a couple by the name of  Charles Powell Guest and I'm not sure whether either is a brother.

Victoria  unassisted arrivals  Nov 1861   ship     Elizabeth A Bright
Carly Powell    10
Ellen Maria  12
John          15
Margaret     8
Mary Ann   6
Maria          34

I am not seeing father Charles GUEST on the passenger list. Did he travel ahead of them?

Do you have  certificate for GUEST - MALLAN marriage.....might find a family member as witness?

If the ship arr. Melbourne Nov 1861, this family should  be in England for 1861 census in April?

Charles Guest may have travelled earlier to Australia. He is not listed in the 1861 UK census - Maria Guest is the Head of the house. However he is listed on Victorian Outward passenger list with the rest of the family going from Melbourne to Sydney in 1862 on the Montezuma.

I am interested in finding where William's siblings went in Australia - there are a couple by the name of  Charles Powell Guest and I'm not sure whether either is a brother.

Without the marriage certificate or death certificate of Charles Powell GUEST, you cannot be certain he is the brother of your great  Grandfather William George GUEST.

This would seem to be his death.

11479/1932  GUEST Charles P
Parents William & Maria (incorrect father. Informant confused perhaps)
At Canterbury

However regarding the confusion of more than one Charles Powell Guest.

Charles Powell GUEST was married to Rebecca (probably  nee MEADLEY)
She had apparently been married previously to Daniel or David ELDRIDGE,as a young bride, and married to GUEST under the name ELDRIDGE.

2417/1873 GUEST Charles
ELDRIDGE Rebecca
At GOULBURN

Among their children was Charles Ernest
14365/1880 GUEST Charles Ernest

Born to this son and Margaret J. was-

4582/1909 GUEST Charles P
Parents Charles E & Margaret J
At Junee

And his death

18998/1965 GUEST Charles Powell
Parents Charles Ernest & Margaret Johanna
At Parramatta

This son, Charles Powell Guest married

4641/1937 GUEST Charles Powell
MADDEN Lillian Mavis

Mavis died young only a year or so after the marriage.  Here is her death notice-

Here is an obituary for Rebecca, the wife of Charles Powell GUEST 1913

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/142658081
Rebecca  GUEST wife of Charles GUEST who died 1913 at Junee. It states her husband  Charles is a business man of Junee. She was 69? (Hard to read ) From Asthma.

Her funeral below,  states "will leave from her son-in law’s home", J. INGS.  Her daughter Violetta married a man who, according to my findings was  her cousin, James INGS

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/142658028

Charles Powelll GUEST and his wife Rebecca spent some in in Melbourne between 1884 and 1889 where there was a  birth  and 2 infant deaths to them.

1918 deceased estate advice re. Charles Powell  GUEST,  bootmaker of Junee.

This man is possibly the immigrant Charles GUEST, husband of Maria nee TURNER.
You have not mentioned whether or not his middle name was also Powell.
