Joshua or Joseph Foster?
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 12:15 GMT (UK) »
Croxley Green, Rickmansworth HO107 Piece 438 Book 20 Folio 41 page 18

FindMyPast transcribes the entries as:

Josh Foster 75 b. Herts
Wm Foster 25 b. Herts
Wm Foster 45 b. Herts
Mary Foster 15 b. Herts
John Foster 14 b. Herts
Sarah Foster 11 b. Herts
Sarah Foster 45 b. Herts
James Webb 25 b. Herts
Emma Webb 25 b. Herts
Mary Webb 2 b. Herts

Viewing the records gives a few occupations, too:

Josh Foster: Keeper of Beer House
both Wm Fosters, John Foster and James Webb: Ag Lab

My query is concerning the abbreviation which Find My Past has transcribed as Josh.

Is that right???

I BELIEVE that 25 year old Wm Foster is my great x3 grandfather; 45 year old Wm and Sarah Foster are my great x4 grandparents; and 75 year old "Josh" Foster is my great x5 grandfather.

Only ... Josh[ua] does not fit ... but Joseph does.

I can find no other records for a Joshua Foster ... but I have a Joseph Forster, son of Joseph and Mary, baptized in Lilley on 29 May 1768 and a Joseph Foster marrying Mary King in King's Langley on 23 January 1787

I also have a Joseph Foster whose death is registered in Watford 1842 Q4 volume 6 page 388 and MIGHT be him (according to the National Burial Index, however, this Joseph was age 20, so not him ... but I wonder whether that is in fact correct!)

My great x5 grandmother Mary Foster is presumably the Mary Foster, 82, who was buried in Rickmansworth on 19 March 1837.

Moreover, I have a William Foster, son of Joseph & Mary, baptized in Rickmansworth on 2 July 1797 (who looks like my great x4 grandfather) and a 46 year old William Foster buried in Rickmansworth on 13 July 1842, who also looks like my great x4 grandfather (my great x4 grandmother Sarah Foster then appearing in the 1851 census as a widow - HO107 Piece 1714 Folio 493 page 22 - living with her daughter Mary who had married Daniel King - seemingly in Lambeth in 1847 Q3 volume 4 page 283)

Soooo ... the family all appears to fit together, IF I am right in reading that abbreviation in the 1841 census as Joseph, not Joshua.

Comments, please?

To me the image shows JOS (Joseph), the transcriber has taken the enumerators mark as an H, he has done the same to others on further pages, but also they appear as Joseph in 1851.
