Norwegian records
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 17:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have any hints on tracing Norwegian birth/baptism records. My great grandfather, Johan Bernhard Johanson (Johnson) born abt 1853 in a village outside Oslo according to family hearsay. I have his marriage certificate which records his father as Oliver a carpenter.
He married Mary Elizabeth Davies (mother Mary Jane Trewarthata) in Newport South Wales on 1st October 1883.
I'm also having trouble accessing the Norwegian Cenus!

Many thanks and Happy New Year  :)

Here is a link to the English site for Norwegian records on Digitalarkivet: http://arkivverket.no/eng/content/view/full/629

In working with Norwegian records you also need to be aware of the use of patronymics where the surname may be the father´s first name with -sen or -son on the end. They also used place names or farm names as surnames.

If Oliver was a carpenter then his occupation (stilling) will probably show as snekker or snedker.

Do you know Johan Bernhard´s occupation. There is a possibility born 1858 at Sem who was a seaman.

Hi

Yes Johan is recorded as a 'Seaman ?M S' on his marriage cert.. a copy of which I have.  ;D This also ties in with family spoken history which I have proved to be very reliable!  :D

Oliver could turn out to be Olaf as well.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

You can probably rule out the 1858 Sem one that I mentioned. I took a closer look and he married in Norway.

Hi ruthvirr

There are 2 records of a Johan Bernhard Johansen in the Swedish Seaman database. He was born in Moss parish in Norway in 1855:

First:
He joined ship in Helsingborg, Sweden and left in Gävle, Sweden. The ship Neptune sailed to the Mediterranean somewhere.

The second:

3 days later he joined the ship Annie to Hartlepool but he jumped ship in Hull.
