Valuation Rolls- some advice please

Checking valuation rolls  (1905)I find my ancestor under- Status is described as Tenant Occupier. ie rent payer and living there?
 On the same page others are down as Inhabitants but seem to live in individual houses so they too would be rent payers and living there or would that describe a house rented out by a company to the inhabitants? Therefore the company would pay the rates?

In the roll there are columns for the proprietor, the tenant and the occupier.

Sometimes the proprietor is the occupier. Sometimes, as in your case, the proprietor has rented the property to a tenant who lives there (the occupier). Sometimes the proprietor has rented the property to a tenant who has someone else occupy the property. For example a tenant farmer might be tenant and occupier of a farmhouse, but only tenant of a farm worker's cottage, the farm worker being the occupier.

I have one where hubby's great grandfather (his widow in the one I downloaded) owns three houses, lives in the 1st, has one son as a tenant and living in the 2nd and has the local burgh as the tenant of the 3rd and a police sergeant living in it.

I also have another relative down as "inhabitant" rather than "occupier" for one year - no idea what the difference is - if any. I can't really justify the extra credits at the moment to see if the full record is more informative
