McLachlans - Inch, Wigtownshire
« on: Monday 05 January 15 21:20 GMT (UK) »

I'm seeking information on John McLachlan born Abt 1827 in Inch, Wigtownshire.  He was married to Emma Kerr and according to 1851 census, was living in Ayrshire.  I'm struggling to find any birth/christening records, due to all of the variations in the spelling of Mclachlan.  Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

James

Hi James

At least one of their children was born in 1855 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYPD-RRW

1855 and the first year of official registration in Scotland had much more info included on BMD registers. You might be able to find more additional info on the parents from this birth entry. It can include for parents where they were born and whether their birth was registered (in the OPRs).

Lots of other info also included so always worth looking at an 1855 cert  ;)

Have you got John's death cert? This should include his parents' names, including his mother's full name, if known to the informant. His 1850 marriage won't include any parents' info as it was before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT2M-45W

Are these Emma's details? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTKF-QRP

Monica

Added: Family trees show her death as being on 25 Mar 1877 in Bridge Street, Catrine, to the parents showing on the FS entry. This cert would show whether husband John was still alive or deceased at the time of Emma's death.

James, you are likely to have the original image for John's death on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  I can see a number of trees online for this family. Emma likely easier to guess at given lots more info, but John less so  :-\ There are at least two possible 1841 census entries for John in Inch in 1841 (maybe more outside of Inch). The death cert should hopefully include full names for his parents, if known to the informant. Maybe a clue for mother's name with 'Margaret W' for his first born daughter (given the names of his next children, Robert and Martha, which fit well for Emma).

I've just had a look on Scotland's people website and found his Death Certificate straight away.  I never realised it would show that much information. It states his Father was Robert McLachlan and Mother was Margaret Wright.  You were right with the Margaret W assumption.

Thanks  :)

That is great James  :) Have to say, records for John earlier are hard to find so far for me  :-\ Hopefully more luck on Emma's side...
