Winifred Louisa OLSEN born Wellington 26 January 1889

The above named relative was the daughter of Hans Jacob OLSEN and Annie Keane.

i have been unable to trace a marriage or death and was alerted to this when a MyHeritage.com  message suggested that she was about to be aged 126. Hardly likely as she would be by far the oldest person in New Zealand.

Any suggestions as to what happened to this relative, the niece of my great grand mother Olava Olsen.

ADDENDUM: For 'several' read 'numerous' - seventy-eight, in fact. This case rumbled on until July 1918 when the convictions against Winnifred and another were finally quashed.

Have you looked into obituaries/death notices for her parents (and siblings if any?)

I see her parents divorced in 1906 (and her father named as co-defendant in another case at the same time).  Annie Jane Olsen mentions her daughter not being in good health - she seems to have been living with her mother.  Do you know what happened to Annie? Did she remarry, stay in the Wellington area, etc?

Yes Spades i had read the reorts on Winifred Olsen in PapersPast. However there are a few Winifred Olsens in BDM so can't be sure she is the family member.

And yes Annie did remarry, she married William George SHILLING in 1907 who died in 1962 and Annie died earlier in 1944.


Hans Jacob OLsen also remarried but not to the lady involved in his adultery leading to his divorce from Annie.

I nave looked at possible marriages or deaths using Winifred's mother's maiden name of Keane and under her step father's Shilling name with no results.

If you read through the paperspast article she was indeed the Winfired Olsen in the 'Upland Road Raid'

It mentions her mother Mrs Shilling
An engagement to a Lieutenant Mullins (broken off?)
An intended marriage to a Captain Ryan
and she had organised a passport to Australia

Perhaps this is evidence that she died in Australia?
Have you found her death at all?

Thanks for the reference of Mrs Shilling being Winifred's mother - I had mised that.

She obviously did not marry either Captain Ryan or Mr Mullins. I have not found any marriage or death record in the Ancestry australia records which has both her names Winifred Louisa included.

I have not yet found a shipping record of her travel from New Zealand
