James Elliot and Jannet? Bailey, Bewcastle, Cumberland
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 08:50 GMT (UK) »
'1861' Bailey, Bewcastle, High Longtown, Cumberland
Jannet Eliot born 1801 in Scotland, blacksmiths widow
Walter b 1833 born Nether Know, Bewcastle, Cumberland blacksmith
James b 1840 Longtown?, Bewcastle, blacksmith
Joseph b 1843 Bewcastle, blacksmith
John Eliot b 1850 Bewcastle, grandson
Sibella b 1853 Bewcastle, granddaughter

I know James Elliott was the father of Walter baptised 1833 at Nether Know, how do I find James Elliots birthdate/place/marriage and his wife Jannet's maiden name?

I have a Jannet Elliott  1882 aged 82 at Carlisle, Cumberland, do you think this is a good possible for her? Her son Joseph was buried at Carlisle

I can't find a death for a James Elliot in this area that died after 18433 but before 1861, probably in the Bewcastle area.

And why does Sibella Elliot disapear and who was her father?

I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me anything, even point me in a right direction

Thankyou KGarrad, try as I might I just can't get them to appear on the 1841 census, I don't know what I am doing wrong ...

I might have found William Elliots 24 march, 1835 baptism at Nether Knowe and his parents are listed as James and Jane Elliot.

Walter Elliot was baptised 15 Feb, 1833 at Nether Knowe and his parents were listed as James and Jannet Eliot.

I think Jane and Jannet are pretty close, they might have used Jane as her name in England? The name Jane has seemed to survive in the family down the line

I am using Ancestry, and had to use the name Jannet Elliot, born 1801 in Scotland, and living in Cumberland.

And the 1851 census!
Class: HO107; Piece: 2428; Folio: 71; Page: 13
Burnfoot, Bailie, Cumberland

Elliot, James  Head  M  57  Master Blacksmith employing 1 man  b Bewcastle
Elliot, Jane  Wife  F  50  b Scotland
Elliot, Walter  Son  M  18  Blacksmith Apprentice  b Bewcastle
Elliot, James  Son  M  12  b Bewcastle
Elliot, Joseph  Son  M  8  b Bewcastle
Elliot, Henry  Son  M  5  b Bewcastle
Elliot, John  Grandson  M  1  b Bewcastle

So that put's James' death between 1851 and 1861.
And confirms his place of birth as Bewcastle.

Using FamilySearch, I found some possibilities?

Baptism 15th April 1798 at Bewcastle
James Elliot, son of James Elliot and Nancy Batty

and (more likely?)

Baptism, 18th September 1793, Scotch Church, Bewcastle
James Elliot, son of Walter and Mary Elliot

I think Walter and Mary Eliot because the name Sybella Elliot (One of their Children) pops up in their sons James family later on, I just found them on the IGI. Sybella was listed as baptised at Netherknowe and so were some of James Eliots older children.

I think this might be case solved :) :) :)

So Walter Eliott must have died after 1795 (Sybella born 1795, baptised at Nether Knowe)

Free bdm death for James Elliot

Dec 1855  James Elliot,  Longtown 10b 213

There are no other choices :)

Thankyou so much for your help KGarrad, I've been using Ancestry and making a right hash of it, I don't think I can get back another generation, I can't even find Nether Knowe on a map! Off to sleep for me :)

Have you tried Scotland's People? The Bailey Quarter of Bewcastle is bordered by Scotland on two sides and Newcastleton (or Copshaw Holm as it is known locally) was, and still is, the traditional shopping focus for the area. I will speak to someone who will know exactly where Nether Knowe is.
