William Nassau Holmes
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 15:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

Been a while since I was last on here - granted it was using the Chat(z) but don;t know why that is not working anymore !!

Anyway, I am trying to gain information on William Nassau Holmes (1838-1920), who after marrying Maria Susan Armagh (1844-1913) and having 9 children left her and the youngest child as too young to travel and headed for Australia / New Zealand or Tasmania with the 8 children.

I am looking for what ship etc and why he left etc - ANY information would be gratefully accepted or point me in the right direction (granted I have been hunting for nearly 6 months and getting nowhere fast).

If you think you can help please contact me or if you need any further information.

many thanks in advance and for even taking the time to read this.

Cheers.

The chatroom is still there and working but you probably need at least 3 posts in order to enter.

Googling 'William Nassua Holmes' brings up some information which seems to differ from what you've posted. So, another with the same name? (you'll need to be careful not to get confused)
"William Nassau Holmes was born on 24th Dec 1832 near the Curragh Camp at Ballysax in Co. Kildare. ... William married Jane Donaldson at King Williams Town, British Kaffaria on 3rd Feb 1858. (Jane Donaldson’s family were from Ballybay, Co. Monaghan) ... The family arrived in Tasmania in 1881, living firstly at “The Falls” near New Norfolk before being granted land at Scottsdale. ..."

Ships to Australia and New Zealand would have left from large ports such as Liverpool but you haven't given any indication at all of when the family left Ireland. However, this post on another forum says between 1880-1890.

The civil registration index gives wife's name as Maria Susan Ardagh (not Armagh)- 1867 Tullamore. Marriage:

Having the correct surname does make it easier to find information. Here's Maria Susan Holmes in her brother's household in 1911- listed as a widow:

In 1901 there's a niece Beatrice Holmes listed (see below):

Hi aghadowey and many thanks for your replies.

Didn't realise about the 3 posts as I was in the chat forum when I was on here last.

The information that you have supplied to me I have gathered already and many thanks again for that. What I now need based on my research to date with William Nassau is that he was married to Maria Susan Ardagh and left her and the youngest child of 9 children and headed to Australia / New Zealand / Tasmania and I am looking for information on what ship he travelled to one of these destinations and what happened to them when they arrived there. The only information I have since they reached their destination is on one daughter (the eldest) Francis Louisa Holmes (1868-1944). It is the other children I am now focusing on for the moment.
If you can point me in the right direction or have information on the above I would be most grateful.
Many thanks for the replies to date.

Also any information on Maria Susan Ardagh after William left would be great too.

In the meantime I have now received information on one of the children other than Frances Louisa and that is Susan Adelaide Holmes who married Edgar Casson - so that is another one sorted.

I've already posted links for Maria Susan Holmes in 1901 and 1911 census.

You can search the online civil registration index for her death (goes up to 1958)-
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

Is there a reason you've started this topic on the Kildare board as most records are point to Offaly (Kings) Co.?
