John Amos born 1764 Duffield
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 17:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi
This is a long shot. I have researched my family history back to John Amos b abt 1764 d 1842 a Grantham Lincs chair maker/wheelwright.  However, I haven't been able to discover his parents and place of birth. On the Family Search website there is a John Amos baptised 25/12/1764 at Duffield Derbyshire, parents Thomas and Anne, sister Mary baptised 19/8/1762. The Christian names Thomas, Anne and Mary all feature in the family tree of John Amos of Grantham and I'm wondering if his family originates from Derbyshire. Has anyone any information about the Derbyshire John Amos, am I barking up the wrong tree?? Any help would be appreciated.
Maggie B

Hi,

On 1841 Census John Amos ( Chair Maker) states he was NOT born Lincolnshire - but impossible to
state for sure he was born in Duffield apart from the possible date of birth 1764.

I notice that when he married 23.12.1794 = Milecent Everitt at Wellingore Lincs, it was by
Licence have you tried to discover if the Marriage Licence still exists?

Maggie B / Spendlove

A transcription by the Lincolnshire FHS, [Lincolnshire Marriage Licence Bonds and Allegations]
{ref.MB 1794/488&489}

Gives the Grooms parish as [sic] "From eleswhere".

However if its important, you may still want to try and get a copy of the original, to check for yourself.

Hi,

And Pallot's Marriage Index has:-

NAME:                   John Amos
RESIDENCE:           of Grantham
SPOUSE:                   Milecent Everitt
MARRIAGE DATE:   23 Dec 1794

But this is only and indication of where he was living at the time of his marriage.

Thank you for your responses Spendlove and Colin, I didn't know that the 1842 census and marriage licence showed he originates from "elsewhere", so that helps. I'm favouring the Derbyshire connection because of the Christian names used in the family line, however....... for some reason his  great grandson, also John Amos who was definitely born in Grantham, has told the 1881 census clerk (Leeds) that he originates from Mansfield Notts! and there does appear to be a John Amos born in Mansfield, but the date of birth is out at 1758.
Any idea how I could obtain a copy of the 1794 Wellingore marriage licence?

First port of call

Lincolnshire archives: http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/residents/archives/

or

Lincs to the past: http://www.lincstothepast.com/
{ I found the marriage quite easily, but you might have to spend more time to find the bond if its on there.}

I too would like to know where John Amos came from . He was in his early life a wheelwright which would have meant employing several men and also he would have some wealth and standing . Most likely he would have done an apprenticeship and this meant eventually become a master and employ journeymen. It may be possible to search apprenticeship records to find out where he spent his early life .

Thanks for your continuing interest Wilser. I obtained a copy of the 1794 marriage bond and although it's interesting, it doesn't show John Amos' place of birth or the name of his father;  he is described as "a wheelwright of Little Gonerby Grantham". I agree with you that the old apprenticeship records might provide additional information, does anyone have ideas about accessing records for Derbyshire, Lincolnshire or possibly Nottinghamshire?
Season Greetings
