Rev Alec M Stephens
« on: Thursday 08 January 15 16:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm looking for some directions please.
I am trying to find an obituary for Alec Miller Stephens, who died Nov 1985 in Yeovil.
Alec was a retired priest with the church of England, previously Rector at Stockton, Tyne and Weir,
he had retired to Yeovil and I believed he lived near by a local convent.

Thanks in anticipation

Does this help?
Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette - Wednesday 08 August 1934
"The living of Birtley, vacant by the death of the Rev. L.L. Barclay, has been offered by Canon F.H. Jackson, Rector of Chester-le-Street, to the Rev. Alec Miller Stephens, curate at St. James's Church, Hartlepool.
Mr. Stephens has been at Hartlepool since 1929. He was formerly curate at St. Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow.
A student at Edinburgh Theological College, Mr. Stephens was ordained deacon and priest by the Bishop of Glasgow."

Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette states that his induction as the Vicar of Birtley was on Wednesday 3rd October 1934.

Thanks for this information.  While he was serving in Glasgow, he and my Grandfather became friends and he was my Mother's God Father.

We hope to maybe visit Yeovil this year and a visit to his resting place would be lovely

thanks for your input

There are two local newspapers covering Yeovil area - they are Yeovil Express and / or Western Gazette.
Perhaps making contact with either or both may be worth while as they usually archive all their newspapers.
It may well be worth a try ...
Eccles (Hoylake / Exeter / Plymouth)
Hicks (Devonport, Plymouth)
Grafton (Exeter, Devon)
Harris (Marazion, Cornwall)
Collard (Yeovil, Somerset)
Johns (Devonport, Plymouth)
Lyle (Bude, Cornwall)

Many thanks for the papers names.  I'll give them a try.
