Martha Hall Windsor birth
« on: Sunday 11 January 15 14:21 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a Birth /baptism for Martha Hall according to census's 1851 to 1891 she was born in Windsor dates differ  between 1810 and 1818.
She married John Goffin in 1835 in St Pancreas making her 20 if she was born in 1815.There is no mention of a father on her marriage record. She had eleven children, the eldest boys are Robert, John and James.  Robert has an unusual middlename of Hemblington I don't know where this comes from.

Any ideas of where I can look?
Thanks Wendy.

I cant see a baptism on FreeReg for a Martha Hall, 1810 - 1820 in Berkshire

As there is no mention of a father on her marriage, she was most likely illegitimate.

You could see if there are any surving Bastardy records for that area. I dont know where if any they would be sorry.

Marriage registers pre-1837 and the start of civil registration do not contain the father's names unless they acted as the witnesses.

The lack of a fathers name in 1835 does not infer illegitimacy

The witnesses signed as Daniel Farage and John Gates, do you know of their connection?

They are in the parish of Hemblington for the 1851 census

I had noticed this  but sort of dismissed it as Robert was born in 1836. Is it "normal " to name someone after a place?
His father was born in Woodbastwick which I think is near Hemblington.

Not at all unusual... Hemblington sounds rather distinguished as a name

My husbands grandmother has the name of the ship her father was serving on during WW1. Not many girls with Leviathon as a middle name!

I am directly descended from Martha Hall through her son George.  I have been stuck on the same question you ask for a long while!  I wonder what your connection/interest is with this family?
