Quick question.  How did you find out about workhouse? Where did you look? Was it on a census?  Sorry that was 3 questions.

That's where the three Redman boys (mentioned by heywood) are in the 1881 census.
Just search Redman born Tonbridge and you'll find them quite easily.

Hi JB and Ruskie,

Thanks.  I found the children on the 1881 census silly me didn't think of that ::)
Also thanks for the link.

Still can find no trace of John on any 1861 census, even tried spelling Redman differently.

There are these births in Tonbridge - children perhaps?

Arthur John Redman              December quarter 1871
George Edward Redman        September quarter 1874
William Redman                    December quarter 1879

There are deaths in 1878 and 1879 for John and Mary.

Ancestry has baptisms Arthur John Redman 5 Nov 1871 Speldhurst Kent, parents John and Mary
George Edward Redman 2 Aug 1874 Speldhurst Kent parents John and Mary.

William is the odd one. John's death was registered Sept quarter 1878, so the latest he could have died was 30 Sept if registered same day. And if a child was conceived earlier that same morning, it would have been born early July 1879. So the birth would be registered Sept quarter. But William's birth was registered in the December quarter.
There is a baptism for a William Redman 29 Feb 1880 at Tunbridge Wells father John mother not mentioned. The name has been transcribed as William John Redman Redman  (surname duplicated).
Unfortunately no images of records only transcriptions.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Mary Redmans  death is registered in Dec   1879,  so  may  have died in childbirth  or  soon  after ,   and that  whoever      arranged  Williams  baptism     knew Mary  had  been  married  to  a  John   so    had father  put  down as  John?

That certainly is a possibility, perhaps mother's name just missed out on transcription. But from timing William can't be John's child. I wonder what happened to William after 1891. Arthueur John said George (brother) was next of kin on army record but said his address was unknown. Then he added an uncle and aunt who are probably Mary's sister and her husband.

some of this on other thread

Sorry guys,

Must have missed the workhouse link on my other post.  I apologise for wasting your time, not intentional.  I was working on kindle at weekend not the easiest thing to see also was cooking dinner and doing a million other things at same time!  I am at work now on proper PC going through everything again. I am still wading through all the replies on  all my different threads.  When I started I didn't know they would come together with Arthur John Redman.

Sorry hope you forgive me ???
