John McGrory
« on: Monday 12 January 15 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm researching my Great, great Grandfather John McGrory, born around 1842 in Donegal.
I know he was married to a Bessy Young and his son was John McGrorey (he added an e for some reason?)
I think he died in 1895 in Donegal, but I can't find his marriage to Bessy.  I have found records stating he had a daughter Mary Anne in 1855, Daniel in 1857, Francis 1859, Sarah, 1862, Bridget 1867, John (my GG Grandfather) born in Pettigo, Co Donegal in 1872 and Catherine 1873.
Would anybody be able to point me in the right direction for his marriage records so I could discover his parents name and possible Elizabeth Youngs parents
Thank you
Richard

What religion was the family? registration of Catholic marriages only started in 1864 so if it was a Catholic ceremony before that date then there will be no civil record.

The dates you posted don't look quite right- if the couple were having children from 1855 onwards then John must have been born before 1842.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
They were RC, and I thought that about the age too, so not too sure when he would've been born.
I do have a death record for a John McGrory in 1897 aged 55 in Donegal with a daughter named Sarah, but I can't be certain it's the same John McGrory

Also a potential Rory McGrory according to this website:

Elizabeth McGrory also appears in an 1873 baptism for Elizabeth McGolrick whose mother is given as Catherine Young.

Thanks for your help.
The name McGoldrick comes into the family at the start of the 20th century through marriage, so there could be a tie there...
I've found another John McGrory dying in the 1890's who was in his 80's but I can't remember where I've found it. It seems more realistic though that he would have been older when he had his first child in 1855
