Mary Gates 1827/1829c Ripon

Hi

Please can anyone help with the following request?

Mary Gates 1827c married John Watson on the 5 Feb 1848 in St.Ann'S, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England

I have all census after marriage all claim she was from Ripon Yorkshire and her marriage states her father as William Gates.

Please can anyone shed any light on an 1841 census prior to marriage ?
Or
Baptism of Mary Gates 1827c father William in Ripon Yorkshire .

Any help very much appreciated

There's this family in Stranton Durham and none born in county apart from little George.

Diana 36
Mary 14
James 7
Betsy 2
George 3 months

Might be something in it as have been trying to find that family in 1851.

Possibly spread about but have found a George 10 and a James 17 separately both with birthplaces Ripon.

James is a nephew with the Sugden family John & Mary which includes a child Dinna (Diana)

I think we can dismiss this family

the Sugden family

Mary Ann Sugden  nee Gates was born 1827 and was the wife if John Sugden they married in 1843 Darlington Durham England

so given that my Mary Gates  married John Watson in 1848 sadly it can't be her, but at least we can dismiss them from the search

There is no marriage in Ripon for William and Diana\Dinah so need to look further afield.

1851 Census

Looking for a Elizabeth Gates born 1838 in Ripon gives this family. Note the mother is called Hannah but could this be Diana\Dinah changing her name. The Ripon records seem to indicate William dying in 1848. Note there is also a Charles born c1848, who are the true parents ? (not in the parish registers). The George Jackson seems to be a separate person in the household perhaps a lodger as Hannah was a pauper.

1861 Census

Charles Gates 13 is with his mother now called Dinah Gates 55 born London (ie that is where St Mary Newington, Surrey is). I think her occupation is formerly milliner (?). I think this is enough to confirm the 1851 census is the right family. Therefore you could get the birth certificates of either Elizabeth or Charles to find Diana\Dinah’s maiden name (although an online tree claims it is Bleach). If so there is this marriage ie in(near) Diana’s home town

Not found the family in 1841 but in 1851 they are at North Street, Ripon so you could see if someone could do a street search on that address in 1841 to see if they are there (maybe a long shot)

Hmm, seems William and Dinah/Diana had a child before marriage so maybe explains them marrying in Lambeth rather than Southwark (ie where St mary Newington is)

I think I disagree with this for the following reasons

1. I think the 1841 census Millipede found is the correct one as the children tie in with the baptisms in the Ripon registers

2. The 1851 census describes James Gates as a nephew to the Sugdens. I think this is possible as I see Mary Sugden is born in London. Therefore what I am suggesting is that Mary Sugden (nee Gates) could be the sister of William Gates (or somehow related to him, but not his child).

Therefore Mary Sugden nee Gates might profit from further investigation
