OPRs Clunie 1829
« on: Wednesday 14 January 15 16:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I've got a page of OPR marriages from 1828/1829 - eight couples in total with five different Church of Scotland ministers officiating from five different parishes Clunie, Kettins, Abernyte, Dunkeld and Lethendy. So, when it reads 'of this parish' do I take it the couples were from the parish of the minister rather from Clunie?
Thanks
Jen

"Of this parish" means the one whose register contains the record. If there are lots of records of ministers from other parishes performing marriages and baptisms it may be that the church was vacant and no permanent minister had been appointed yet. Perhaps the incumbent minister was seriously ill and the Presbytery had organised a rota of neighbouring ministers to carry out baptisms and marriages.

Thanks GR2 that's good news as I was beginning to think my relatives might be living Kettins instead of Clunie!  Given what you said I've checked and the minister of Clunie the Rev William MacRitchie (1754 -1837) was replaced by his son Thomas MacRitchie in 1829.  The son must have taken over sometime after 12th of July 1829 the last marriage on the page.
