Francis Little
« on: Thursday 15 January 15 15:16 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the marriage of Francis Little, Postmaster, Clonmany
Children,  George  15/4/1845  John 14/4/46 James 5/9/1848 Anne 3/5/1851, Elizabeth 20/6/1851 and possibly a Frank? Francis died 6/6/1886 aged 80  born c1806.
His wife was Elizabeth( Betty) Sheils or Doherty and she was a local girl. He was Church of Ireland so it was a mixed marriage. I think he was originally posted to area as a Revenue Policeman.

It is unlikely that a marriage record exists for this marriage, if it was a mixed marriage as you think then it probably took place at St. Mary's Roman Catholic church, Clonmany.

Marriages are recorded for the church but begin in 1852, so unfortunately a few years too late for your needs, here's a link to a page on the parish which includes marriage records from 1852 -1900

if Francis was posted to the area then he would have been a busy man! The Clonmany area had a reputation in the 1800's as the Poteen making centre of Inishowen. It was also a very risky profession:
"No gauger (excise officer) dare sit in his own room without pistols, nor go out one hundred yards without a police escort" , taken from Donegal Poitin, Aidan Manning.

Thanks for your reply. I have Aidan Manning's book. I think the records are all in Kew. I was told recently that it was Francis Little's father(possibly called George) who was the Revenue Man. James Little, son of Francis, was also Postmaster and after that he was the Emigration Agent for the Anchor Line. The Clonmany Littles were related to Littles in Redcastle. They had a James, Francis and George too. I'm still trying to work our the connection. Growing up I was told the Littles (1) came from the Lough Shore, and (2) from Co Fermanagh. I was also told that Francis and bride might have been
married at home. I don't think so,because I found out from COI records (PRONI) that he was very involved in the running of the Old Church at Straid (Clonmany). His signature was on a few documents.
Are the Post Office records in Kew as well?

Don't know how far back they go but Ancestry has appointment books for the Post Office, found my grand dad in them during the early 1900s.

Thanks Rathmore. I have the Clonmany information, but nothing before that. His father might have been called George? Francis named his first child Geo. born 1845. A few years ago I looked for Littles
births in St. Michael's ( Trory, I think), There were plenty of Littles but I couldn't connect them.
The records for the Old Church in Straid are all missing. I posted on the Fermanagh page in the hope
that other Littles might recognise the Francis L:ittle who died in Clonmany. He may also have had a connection with the Revenue Police.
