Need some advice please

John Francis Herridge was born 1873 in Brazil (British subject)  his parents where Arthur and Sarah Herridge both born and married in Bristol.  Arthur was a Mason.  They married in 1871. Their second child Frederick was born in Bristol in 1875 (c).

Is there any way I can find out when or why they went to Brazil?

Any help would be appreciated

One possibility is that Arthur worked on canal building. Do you know where in Brazil John was born? You could research building projects there between late 1871 - early 1875.

ADDED I had a mason ancestor who left Ireland to go to Nova Scotia to help build the Shubenacadie canal in the 1830s.

How about putting your question on the Other Countries board, so that people with experience of Brazil can help you?

Other British engineering activities include railways, mining both gold and diamonds and other precious stones. Cornish miners were in great demand in South America, there are several sites with relevant information.  I've been unable to find any entries for your John Francis Herridge, though while looking through the Brazil section of Family Search I found an immigration document for my grandfather including his photograph!!!! Another document for my collection.  Should you need any help with Portuguese on documents I may be able to help.

Sorry to bump a very old thread - but I'm also interested to know more about John and Arthur's time in Brazil.  I've been told previously that Arthur went there to help with brick production but I've not found anything that supports this story.  I've not managed to track down any immigration records either.  Any information gratefully received.

Should also point out that I'm John Francis Herridge's great grandson and (as I understand) the last Herridge from that line.
