Olive Eames - 2 weddings
« on: Friday 16 January 15 15:30 GMT (UK) »
Olive Eames and Charles Giles has their banns at Putney in 1808, but Olive and Charles also had banns in Farnham in 1811.
Any ideas please! Are you legally married after 3 banns?

I think you still need an actual wedding ceremony!

Maybe there were no decent wedding venues in Putney at the time so they shelved the wedding for a while  :-\

All sorts of reasons why they postponed the wedding - a death in the family, "cold feet" about the whole thing, etc.

But as has been said, however many times you have Banns read in however many different parishes, you will still not be married without the wedding ceremony!

You still need to have a marriage ceremony. Banns are only read out at the local church to announce a marriage 3 weeks before the actual ceremony will take place.

The actual wedding was the one in Farnham in 1811.   Perhaps they split up and got back together?

I like the idea of someone rushing in (a la Jane Eyre) saying "stop the wedding"....at least they did get married in Farnham in 1811...otherwise I would not be here! LOL

Were either or both of them under age when the first banns were read? If so, perhaps the parents wouldn't give consent.

No, they were both in their mid-20s.
