Daniel Ferguson Berry, Gourock, Glasgow.
« on: Saturday 17 January 15 07:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I Haven't got very far with My G/ Grandad's. he was born at Greenock or Gourock, Glasgow. Scotland about 1928. he married a Welsh girl in Liverpool1859. His occupation was "An Iron Shipbuilder of some repute". They had 3 children, William Daniel born Liverpool 1861, Alfred Edward Berry born Lancaster 1869 and Ada Berry born Liverpool 1875.
Alfred Edward was my G/father. Daniel Ferguson I feel must have been on a ship at Lancaster or working in a ship yard.He was obviously a good worker with the words "of Some Repute" being used in a report of him. He was in business with another man Duckitt, having a (Shipwright and Smiths) business at Dukes dock on the Mersey 1892 1893. He died in Wallasey in 1895. Any help would be greatly appreciated and hopefully I hope I can return the favour. Best Regards Ken Berry

Hi Ken

Have you got a copy of the 1859 marriage entry for Daniel and wife Mary Jane Richards? Having at least his father's name and occupation could help in trying to find further info on Daniel.

He shows as lodging in 1851 in the Toxteth Park area:

Daniel Berry, 23, unmarried, lodger, b. Glasgow. Occupation down as an Iron Ship builder.

Monica  :)

Hi
One online tree gives parents William Berry and Jean Ferguson.
The couple married at West or Old Greenock 18.7.1825 but I can't see a baptism and the tree doesn't have one.

Thanks Ciderdrinker. Something to work with. Names for parents would seem to fit with things like middle name for Daniel and the names he gave his children. Just need to find some documents to back that up as always...

I wonder if William and Jane headed off to the Liverpool area a few years later? There is this possible christening entry down in 1831 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JQQV-RQS The family may show in 1841 in the Lancashire area maybe?
