John Boyle Hamilton, which ship?
« on: Sunday 18 January 15 06:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello, could anyone please tell me any details of him coming to New Zealand. I guess he would be listed as James Hamilton, would that make him hard to find on shipping lists?

John Boyle Hamilton
born 1850, Ballywalter, County Down?
m. Donkin, Emma on the 02 Jul 1874, Lambton Quay, Wellington

Troublesome ancestor because of his common name, Emma Donkin, so much easier, thankyou Whiteout7

Hi again

Do you have an "occupation" for this man, please ?

   ~  Lu

It's ok ... can see in 1880-81 that his occupation is "draper".   ;)

Hi Whiteout7,

A Mr J. HAMILTON, single, aged 34, occupation Merchant, travelled on board the Claud Hamilton from (or via) Melbourne to Wellington.

Probably not your man as too old, but worth keeping in mind. All the other namesakes I could see arrived at other New Zealand ports, and many recorded their occupation as 'Miner'.

Hi Lucy, yes I checked family search. The occupation is a good idea, he was a draper, so maybe he would not arrive as a miner.

Spades, he was married at 24, so I could narrow down my time search to 1866 - 1874 (I hadn't thought of this I just looked at all the J.Hamiltons freaked out)

It is James Boyle Hamilton (I said John but I mixed the name up)

Hmm ... but the NZ marriage index gives John Boyle HAMILTON to Emma DONKIN in 1874.   ???

... as does the marriage notice in newspaper (John Boyle HAMILTON)

... plus 6 or so children born to the couple also have father's name indexed as John Boyle HAMILTON.

 ???

Added:   and he's John Boyle on electoral rolls, too.

Just checked sorry, I'm doing it again John Boyle Hamilton, no wonder none of the records match.

I've narrowed it down to time of arrival 1866 - 1874. So I guess I will just keep looking in the IGI for a John Hamilton, draper, aged 16-24

Hi Whiteout7,

I have just realised that I omitted to give the year in reply#3 above. It was 1870.

Here are other search results:

Passengers to New Zealand via Victoria AUS between 1866-1874:

1870    ‘J. HAMILTON’ age 31, single, a Miner from Scotland per RANGITOTO to Otago.
1872    ‘J. HAMILTON’ age 30, single, a Miner from England per ALBION to Wellington.
1869    ‘Mr. J. HAMILTON’ age 36, single, occupation not given, from Scotland per HERO to Sydney.
1869    ‘John HAMILTON’ age 27, married, a Miner from Ireland per OMEO to Hokitika.
1870    ‘John HAMILTON’ age 24, single, a Dealer from Scotland per RANGITOTO to Greymouth.
