Henry MacLaren - South Leith
« on: Sunday 18 January 15 14:37 GMT (UK) »
Henry is my GGG GF but I've hit a stumbling block in progressing further with him.

I can find his marriage to Janet Croll in South Leith 1823 but cannot find his birth or death record.

I can find entries in South Leith for his children , but he is dead by the 1841 census.

The only other things I know about him is that he was a sailor/seaman/fisherman.

Following the Scottish family naming conventions, which the family seems to have used, his parent would be Charles and  Isobel/Isabella.

Used Scotlands People, freecen, ancestry ...all to no avail.

I would be grateful if anyone can point me in a direction where I might find any other information.

Many Thanks

George

Hi George

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Have you confirmed Janet Croll's mother's name from her death cert (1873?)? Marriage entry in the OPRs gave her father as James didn't it https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY91-ML3?

From 1851, Janet croll showing as born in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. Maybe her family moved down to Leith not long after with this entry showing here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTTQ-J7S  That is a guess! Is that the correct mum for Janet Croll? Have you found young Janet b. 1837 on the 1851 census anywhere given she is not with mother and siblings James, George and Isabella? Sometimes a way of picking up on extended family.

Maybe she was with her sister Jane? Can't see Jane's marriage to confirm further though. From 1851:

Wilson WILLIAM   23 Painter Journeyman b. Edinburgh
Jane WILLIAM 26 b. Edinburgh
Janet MCLAREN   Sislaw 13 b. Edinburgh
Address: 40 No Richd St, Edinburgh

Hi  Monica,

Thanks for the speedy reply.
I have confirmed her mother as Jean Ross.

I haven't found young Janet except her BC and on the 1841 Census....it shows the family were parish paupers at that point ...as Henry had died previously ...how or where I don't know.

I will have a look for her in 1851 , Thanks

George
