Mckenzies emigrated to Pei , Canada
« on: Sunday 18 January 15 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm looking for Mckenzies who left Scotland in 1858 and settled the same area of Prince Edward Island. They are all listed together on the Canada 1881 census Murdoch 49, Norman 47, Malcolm 37, Donald 40. It is believed they are brothers. They may have left Scotland with Alexander McLure and Catherine McDonald who also arrived 1858.
Thankyou,
Rod McLure

Rod,

You want the 1851 Census for Portree (Inverness) look for a weaver named Malcolm McKenzie 53 spouse Margaret 50 the lads are listed in order.  There is also a young one named Archy who I assume was left behind.

You can acquire this original copy from Scot's People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Do you have parent's names for these men to make sure this is the correct census ...And have you found details on them after the 1881 census

No , I do not know the parents names. I have several census entries for each with all their families from 1881 and on. I was told they came from Isle of Skye in 1858. I was also told they were brothers, but have not confirmed that yet. I would feel better if the other name was Murdoch and not Munro.
The reason I am interested in these men is my grfathers - gRmother Ann Nicholson was married to Roderick McKenzie. She lived near these "brothers" in 1881 and 1891 but the strange thing is Roderick was not in the house with her, the census does not say Widow for either year. She later moved to New Jersey to live with her daughter

His name on the census was "Murdo" not Munro (Murdo/Murdoch are inter-changeable).  They didn't use their formal names on the census.

For a Tim's and a Muffin plus a PM with your email I'll send you a copy of the actual 1851 Census.

And, was McLure/McDonald a married couple or single when they arrived.

Thanks,
I was able to get the census from Scotlands People.Alex and Catherine were supposedly married 15 Mar 1858 and emigrated July of the same year.
Ann Nicholson was born on Pei.
