DEACON family Leicestershire
« on: Tuesday 20 January 15 00:17 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone is researching the Deacon family(ies) around Leicestershire? If so I'm struggling to find details of Elizabeth Deacon who was born around 1800-1805 and later married Charles Vines. There are several on FamilySearch who could be her because she gave various inconsistent ages in later years.

In the 1841 census William and Ann Deacon were living in the same dwelling as Elizabeth and her family suggesting that they may have been related but Elizabeth's age was given as 35 (rounded) whereas they were 20 and 25.

Elizabeth's 1851 and 1861 census records both state that she was born in Kilby but there is no record of her baptism in records for that village. There were however a lot of Deacons in the adjacent village of Fleckney, so she may have been born elsewhere but remembered living in Kilby as a child.

Deacon has other spellings such as Deakin.

I do not have access to other parish records in Fleckney or elsewhere in Leicestershire other than via FamilySearch so all help gratefully received.

Tony

do not always rely on fs.o for materials.....       sometimes freereg on the freebmduk site has materials.

try looking at genuki >>>>>>> for film scopes of an area or Hugh Wallis pages on anc ; and you might have to venture out to a local LDS centre for a film of the parish you are interested in....especially for Leics.
as well have you contacted the Leics FH groups  ..............

as you say there are a couple of options from a nearby place.....    sometimes folk know themselves as being of an area and tell folk as such when in fact they were from a nearby place assumed as a general regional area encompassed by the former.

go with ya gut sometimes ........  you can always change the entry if a better choice comes of avail, and dont believe censuses anyway cos the age and birthplace is not always given correctly by the individual, and the census is generally known as age at last birthday   so it could be anything up to five years out cos some folk only know their age from a christening date not a birth date in that period......

Hi fastfusion

Thanks for taking an interest. I've tried FreeREG and Hugh Wallis in the past and more recently. I don't live close to Leicestershire so a trip to the local record office would be a significant investment in time and money. I've not tried the LDS route however. The local LDS church is not a history centre but there is one about 30 miles away.

My thought was that maybe someone with strong connections to Leicestershire may already have done the work on the Deacons and could provide me with a 'leg up' so to speak.

I know that information on censuses is only as good as the information given to the enumerators and that they sometimes added their own errors as they transferred the results to the standard forms. I'm not a fan of adopting a relative just because the facts seem to fit albeit I guess that we all do that to some extent given that there is no such thing as absolute proof when it comes to ancestry.

Good question Jackie

Don't know. The wedding was in 1831 and was preceded by banns but I don't where I'd find more details of the wedding given that it was before 1837

Hi Willsy

Thanks once again for your interest and help. You're correct that in a way I'm asking the same question as on the previous occasion. My reason for doing so was to see whether anyone on the forum was actually 'doing' the Deacon family and had got farther than I have - which is basically no farther forward than the stuff you've mentioned above.

I live in Hampshire so getting to the Wigston record office is not really practicable for me. I only really know that Elizabeth Deacon thought that she came from Kilby but transcripts of the Kilby records don't bear that out. So I don't know where to start looking, other than via FreeREG, familysearch etc.
