Looking for info on my great grandfather Hugh Eaton......all I know is on the 1901 census it says he was born in Donegal.....I think circa 1874/5.  Hugh married and lived in Derry,  Many thanks

Hi,
The 1901 census says he was born in Derry City. I also noticed that the census gives his wife as "Ellin". I can find the marriage of a Hugh Eaton to Ellen Tracey on 24 Aug 1898 in St. Lukes Lower Falls Church of Ireland, Shankill, Belfast.

Regards

Just noticed - the 1911 census says Donegal and the name of the fathers of the above couple were James for both.
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Strabane is one of the Registration districts for Donegal.
There is a Hugh Eaton in 1877 but also a death with the same birth year so likely the same man, but there are also two Male Eaton in 1872.
Only Donegal ones I can see.

if only one of these has a father James..........

I notice Hugh could only read in 1901 and made his mark on the Census, this may explain the two different places of birth.

Hi Kingskerswell
Many thanks for the look up, I meant to put 1911 census....it's a bit confusing as it states on the 1901 census Derry.....any ideas why this might be...I think he was born or had a connection to Donegal as do a lot of Derry people.

They may not be Hugh's but maybe you could find a baptism for them to find out.

Hi,
I can confirm the marriage kingskerswell  found in Belfast to be correct, I see the birth record for son James, 1901 Waterside Urban Reg District, Londonderry, mother Ellen Tracey. Also a son Hugh, born same year (You can see Hugh in 1901 Census, probably twin of James, but must have died) 3 children born 2 living in 1911 census

Male Eaton, born 1872, Raphoe Civil Parish, Donegal
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FP1C-M61 possibility for fathers birth record

Consider a couple called James Eaton and Catherine Lynch: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG87-QY1

... who had a child called Hugh in 1877.  Yes, a bit off the 1911 census return age and the wrong Hugh if the same one as the Hugh whose death was registered in 1897 in Strabane, but in case not, here are his and his siblings' details:

Catherine 1868: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F56C-34M
James 1870: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FP1W-4RN
Patrick 1872:  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPYB-2MZ
William 1874:  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FP13-7L6
Hugh 1877: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG81-C9G
Mary 1879: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGVH-W3T

Nothing else to rule this in for now, so just to note.
