Devereux family
« on: Friday 23 January 15 13:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Some extremely kind person has put together a family tree for my maternal ancestors and one branch came as quite a surprise:

http://www.genealogydepot.com/14493b.html

I wasn't expecting to come across a name like Devereux as my family has such a working class background.

Does anyone have any further information on the Devereuxs of Suffolk, particularly how a French name ended up in East Anglia?  :)
Ireland - Beattie, McAlister, O'Neill, Smyth, Mulgrave

Suffolk - Farrant, Mitchell, Devereux, Nunn, Canham

There is a definite Devereux link in the area around Rattlesden, Drinkstone, Hesset, Rougham.
I have a Devereux Hustler on my tree. Buried at Norton. I have put in a link above which may or not be helpful.

The name is more common than you think! ;D

1881 census reports 827 people with the surname Devereux, and another 168 with the surname Devereaux.

I would guess that they cam over with the Normans?

This gives history from Norman times.

Also they were Earls of Essex. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Devereux_family     gives links to 41 pages of Devereux family members.

There was a Devereux family in Icklingham, Suffolk, in 1861-91 and perhaps longer. The head of houshold was a brickmaker, William Devereux, and the house they lived in for quite some time was known as "Brick Kiln" in the censuses. My own ancestors lived in the same house in 1851.

Hello everyone!

Thank you very much for all this info, it's been really helpful :)

I've hit a brick wall with a Richard Devereux who I can't trace beyond his marriage in 1729 to Elizabeth Jordan. He was married at Tostock which is pretty close to Rattlesden so I assume he's an offshoot of the Devereuxs you've mentioned above.

He had a son, also named Richard, who was born in Great Barton in 1730. But I can't find any more details on Richard Snr.

Does anyone have any info/suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
