« on: Saturday 24 January 15 22:54 GMT (UK) »
 ???
Sorry, but I cannot find anything else out.  Can anyone help me proceed?

I am trying to find out who the parents are of John Cave as below. The only ones so far have been
William Cave  -1779 and Mary "Butt"??? -1780... married 21/5/1735 and both buried at St Andrew Church.....William and Mary being the names of John's first two legitimate children.

John Cave baptised 18/3/1753 Compton Dundon.
resided Compton Dundon 1783..Land tax...tenant of Mr Bartlett
Married Pitney by Langport 22/10/1783 (licence) to Sarah Hill 1767-1831
resided Compton Dundon...Yoeman Farmer...Bastardy Order brought by Hannah Cary 1763-? who had a girl child born 1784.
Died 30/1/1817 Compton Dundon.
Buried 7/2/1817 St John the Baptist, Pitney...Somerset Heritage Centre.
Probate/Will...mentions wife, children, Charles(son) being executor.

Thanks for anyone's help,
Chris
PS. Yes I am a member of the Cave Family History Society and have had no luck there either, hence my new post.

Quite old to marry in 1783.
Did they Licence have he was Widowed?

Hi Trish,
Thankyou for your interest...I have been looking for any info on John and upon looking at Somerset Pitney Marriages (Rootsweb), where I found the original marriage etc, it does say that he was a bachelor.
Is it possible to actually get a copy of the Licence, and would it have any further information on John and from where he came? The family does not appear on any BDM's of Pitney prior to their marriage. He was a yeoman farmer at the time of his marriage as a tenant of "Mr Bartlett". He just seems to appear from then on.
There is an entry of Baptism on 18/3/1753 at Gillingham, Dorset for a John Cave, father William which is the one I have been interested in. He and his wife Mary are buried at St Andrew, Somerset.
These two names appear as the first two children's names of John and Sarah.
Are Gillingham and St Andrew Church nearby?
Then of course I am at another standstill following William and Mary!  :(
Bye,
Chris

I have just completed research into the "Ireland" family surname in Somerset and have some interest in the Cave family of Wiltshire.   One major thing I noticed , not only of the Ireland family but of others I have done for Somerset is that it is very important to check the surrounding counties, for example a lot of folk living in Bristol seem to end up living in northern SOmerset or visa versa....   So check GLS and Wilts for your Cave family as well , as I have seen a lot of Caves mentioned in both..... good luck with that
fusion :)

Hi agian,
Sorry I've been away so just catching up.
I am no expert on Licences but yes they often have extra info. Maybe someone else can help you with how to obtain it.
Genuki is excellent for researching Churches and nearby Parishes.
It is entirely possible the Family originated from Dorset and moved to Somerset (the 2 Counties are next to one another).

I would look for any other Children of John/Mary in Devon and see if any of them turn up in Somerset.

Trish :)

Hello chrissiecruiser,

The marriage Licence would be held in the Somerset Record Office at Taunton. This may contain further information but in those days, it may just show the details you hold. The fact they married by Licence indicates they were of some status and wealth.

The Parish records for Compton Dundon are on the Somerset OPC site:

http://wsom-opc.org.uk/index.php?id=39&k=297

This doesn't indicate that the Cave family had much of a presence there at that time. It seems that they came from outside the area.

There is a marriage of a Susannah Cave to James Cable in 1778 and a witness to this was one John Cave. As you say, both William and Mary Cave were buried there in 1779 and 1780 respectively.

http://wsom-opc.org.uk/assets/components/opc_database/MarriageRegistersDynamic.php?e=170

There are a number of Cave baptisms in Somerset on the Somerset OPC site:

http://wsom-opc.org.uk/index.php?id=2

There are also a number of marriages and burials for people by the name of Cave too.

I think there is enough evidence to suggest that William and Mary Cave were the parents of John Cave but proving it might be difficult. The surname of Butt is an old Somerset name and there are many people with this name in the Mendip villages.

Compton Dundon is some distance from Gillingham, see Genuki:

Jo.
