Hi Michele

Am I right in thinking that it is information on Charles (or Charles Tawse) BRUCE, (the father Walter), you are wanting ??

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

"New Zealand Herald" (Auckland) - 27 March 1891 - Obituary

The above newspaper carries the Obituary for "Mrs BRUCE" [Jane], the wife of late Charles BRUCE and mother of Walter, Archibald, and 3* other surviving sons. [* Obit. says 4 surviving children ... but 5 are named. ]
It mentions (amongst other things) that the late Mr BRUCE (Charles) was a well-known builder in the old days of Auckland.

I do not know how this came about, but at Auckland in 1872 depositions to the Resident Magistrate, Auckland, Isaac HARDING, Master of the "NEBRASKA" was charged with breach of Quarantine Regulations regarding Walter Coombes BRUCE.

Some more in-depth reading probably required with the abovementioned.  :)

[Walter Coombes BRUCE in giving evidence, said he had a brother (employed in the engine room) on board the "Nebraska" upon her voyage from San Francisco (and that he'd met with his brother on 23 May (1872?) when the vessel came to Auckland  ...     The brother's christian name is not given, he's just referred to as (surname) BRUCE.]
