John Noy and Hannah Anne Reeve (Son: Michael Noy- Convict)???
« on: Monday 26 January 15 05:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

We have currently hit a "brick wall" while researching Michael Noy's (1818-1847) parents. Michael was born in 1818 to John Noy (1793-) and Hannah Anne Reeve (1795-). Michael was a chimney sweep who stole a donkey at age 15 and was sent to Australia for 14 years. Was wondering if anyone knew the dates of John and Hannah's deaths, as I cannot find any records, and if anyone knew their occupations, that would also be great.

I hope someone knows something!

Thanks

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Looking at Cornwall-OPC-Database, I can't find either Michael's baptism or the marriage of his parents?
Even using the more regular West Country spelling of Noye?

However, some Ancestry trees have the parents marriage in Wickham Market, Suffolk, 5th Septener 1815.
So I would guess that Michael was actually born in Suffolk?

EDIT! Some trees have Michael born at Marlsford? I think this is Marlesford, Suffolk!

Michael's conviction was at Colchester (Essex), Easter Session.
Sentenced to 14 years transportation.

Hi,
A Michael Noy, son of John Noy and his wife Hannah was registered on 6th May 1818 at Marlesford Suffolk.
Family Search cites GS Film number: 919624
Could this be the family you are looking for?
I noticed a few deaths in Marlesford Suffolk for Hannah Noy, so it would help if we can find them in a census.
Will keep looking.

Thanks for the replies so far. Good to know that I might find out a bit more.
Just a little summary of what we know about Michael and his parents.

John Noy was born on the 29th Dec 1793 in Madron, Cornwall, England to William Noy (mother unknown). Hannah Anne Reeve was born on the 8th July 1795 in Warwick. I am unsure where they meet but were married in “Suffolk County Bts,Suffolk,England”. Michael was born on the 6th May 1818, and I have no other known siblings to him. I am unsure of his life up till he is 15 when he is convicted of stealing a donkey. He was working as a chimney sweep at the time. I know he has other offences (which I am unsure) and had also served time on a prison hulk. He got a 14 year sentence and died in 1847, 2 weeks before he got his ticket of leave. I am also unsure what he died from.
As chimney sweeps were not paid by the “master sweep” and was given food and accommodation. I am thinking that his parents were either dead, he had been sold to the master sweep or he had been picked up from the workhouse. But as I have no records on his parents or him I cannot confirm any of this.
It would be great for someone to help fill in the gaps. The replies so far have been great and I didn’t expect it! As I don’t live in England, I can’t access as many records so this was one of my last options. For a 15 year old chimney sweep, I have no idea why he would have stolen a donkey. Any ideas why?
Thanks so much again!

Also, I do not have any court records on Michael's conviction. I now know where he was convicted though. But no records on the "Old Bailey" website. If anyone would also be able to help out that would be amazing!
