The early years of Charles William Duffin
« on: Monday 26 January 15 14:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I cannot seem to find the early lie of Charles William Duffin. He appears in the 1881 census as Chas W Duffin. He is a groom and 23 years old. I'm not sure where he is born - it looks like Wallon but I think it might be Walton i.e. Walton-on-the-Wolds. RG11 3145 34 4

I am assuming that he is the Charles William Duffin who marries Mary Jane Wadkin D1883 Leicester. This assumption is based on  the fact that Charles working in the same house as Mary Jane's sister, Fanny, in 1881.

By 1891 Mary Jane is a widow, living with her parents in Rempstone. She has with her Arthur, 6 and Mary E, 4 while her other daughter (and I haven't yet got my head around this) is also called Mary  - Mary Jane Valentine Duffin - she is 3 and boarding a couple of doors away.

Charles has died and it would seem his registration is D1888 Leicester. However, I cannot find any trace of him before 1881. There is another Charles Duffin lurking around Leicestershire at the same time born in Wymondham/Garthorpe and registered in Melton Mowbray. He must be a different person as he outlives my Charles.

So where is he in his earlier life, even allowing for his not being born locally I cannot seem to find him.

Any ideas gratefully received

Brie

an initial step should be to get the 1883 Marriage Cert - to hopefully reveal Charles' Father's name ... altho this isnt guaranteed to either be shown, or even correct !

If that 1881 PoB is actually Watton - there is such a place in E. Yorks ... which would be in this Birth Index entry's Regn Dist.

Thankyou for your reply Lostris and of course you are right but Charles is not my direct ancestor and I have a few certificates to purchase ahead of the sprigs or side shoots. I was just intrigued by his popping into my tree from nowhere for just a few years before dying. As he left 3 young children and a widow his impact was quite large for just a few years of being in the family. So my curiosity was aroused and then not quenched.

Cheers

Thankyou for these Willsy. He really does feel like a Leicestershire man and looking at the 1881 census again, I'm pretty certain that there is a ditto under the Leics. on the line above. He's just never with his wife apart from the wedding and seems to be a blank before 1881. Still every little bit of information helps build up a picture and I'm sure I'll get there in the end.

Thankyou
Brie
