Michael John Donohoe
« on: Tuesday 27 January 15 12:16 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on my gt grandfather Michael John Donohoe, from County Cork and for any other members of his family.  I don't know when he was born (? circa 1875-80).  He emigrated to Australia when he was in his late teens and married an Alice Ada Smith - again, I don't know when.  He apparently started the first mail train between Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie, Western Australia.

I have a Marriage Certificate for his daughter, Alice Ethel on 16/1/1922 in Perth, Australia to Frederick David Baldwin.  Alice Ethel Donohoe was aged 19.  Michael John Donohoe's profession is given as "Motor Proprietor".

Can anyone help?  Thanks, if you can.

Hi Ricoba and thanks so much for that information.  I'll now investigate getting hold of the death certs as you suggest.
As a total newcomer, can I ask how you had this information?  Are the Donohoes, who married with the Baldwins, anything to do with your family?
Regards Foxglove 54.

He was born late enough to have a birth certificate but to find it you will need more detail than Co.Cork.
Cork has 18 Registration Districts.
First you need to find all you can in the Austrialia records. Those death Certs would be a great start.
Ideally you need his father's name, mother's would be great as well and where in Cork he came from.
I don't know about Certs in Austrialia but his marriage cert should have his father's name at least.

FamilySearch is a good place to start.

A  scenario to consider a friend of mine who had a son of 12 married his girlfriend on his deathbed so that she would have widow's right's to his house etc, noteing you have been given a death date of 1933 and a possible marriage date of 1933

Sorry previous mentioned Marriage was in 1931.
I agree with previous post that you should search Australian angle first.
Try TROVE, free Australian newspapers. Sorry couldn't get link going but there is a death notice in 8 April 1933  for Michael John Donohoe (died the 7th) which mentions the correct wife's name, daughter(Alice), son in law
(F.Baldwin) plus a few other relatives. Drats no mention of where he was born.
You shouldn't have to much trouble finding this but if you send a PM , personal message, I'll send it on.

Hopefully this link works to that death notice.

It's says he is the stepson of Mrs E Donohoe which indicates his father if not his mother also went to Australia. Also an age of 60. So born circa 1873. You can't always trust ages on death notices.
