I looked at the 1851 census for Fittleworth in the hopes of spotting likely parents but only saw an entry for Bridger Stent and family.  He was 30.  Possibly a brother?    Landed Proprietor and obviously well off.     Does that fit with Charles' circumstances?   Where did you get the Fittleworth birth place from?

In 1841 Bridger is a university student living with William Stent age 55 - Independent means -and Henry age 10.   All born in county.  Lots of servants so again very affluent.
If you do have a connection with that family they should be fairly easy to trace but it is only a wild guess at present.

Do you have his 1891 NZ Death Cert?
Does it not name his Parents?
NZ Death Reg on Anc has him born Bognor Regis

To help with search Charles and Sarahs Children from NZ BMD were;
Isabella 1851
Unnamed 1853
Unnamed 1855
Unnamed 1858
Thomas 1859
Harriet Jane 1868
Robert William 1871
+ a Frances according to this;
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=33847476&ref=acom

Also on a Tree Children are named as;
Charles
Isabella
Robert William
Bertha
Thomas
Henry E

Just posting as may help if possible christening is found for Charles as his Parents names were probably passed down to the Children.

Trish :)

Hi Trish & Sillgen,

I have the Family tree back to Charles. It just says b 1820 Sussex. Ordered in  the original Parish Records at the local The Family History Centre, but no Charles.

Got Fittleworth from The Coat of Arms that was at the Family Reunion.

There is a Charles Stent married Sarah Cooper 8/7/1817 Petwoth Sussex. ( Just down the road from Fittleworth. Wonder if they had a Charles.

Charles was only 20 yrs old Single, farm labourer, when he arrived in NZ.

Cheers
Barbara

I can only find two children for Charles and Sarah at the moment.  Mary Jane baptised 1820 and George 1822 at Pulborough.  Charles was a Miller of Heath Mill Pulborough.
The Sussex Family History Group database does not show a Charles Stent baptism c1820.   If you have Sussex ancestors it is well worth joining them as they have good online resources.  They have 213 records for Stent but only one is baptised in Fittleworth - back in 1564 so that does not sound a likely place.
There are some mentions of Fittleworth in wills of Stent men but all after your Charles has left.

Looking at the 1785 Land Tax Records for Fittleworth, there is a John Stent who owned a couple of places.
There is also a John Stent who owned the 'Boghouse' in Amberley, not too far away.

There are lands called Stents in nearby Greatham and Petworth.

So there are some other likely places that might hold the key.

 Hi,

Is there anyway I could get information of the Tollemache Family of Ham House, Employees of the 1833 to 1841. Would it have there place of birth.

Interested in Charles Stent aged abt 20yrs in 1820 a labourer, who the Tollemache Family  sent out to New Zealand with 2 other single men and  3 married men with wives and families to Wellington.
I have read info on Ham House history.

Cheers
