Hi there,
Can anyone help with some more detailed information about this crest. I believe it to be Clan Donald. But the armorial is different from those that I have seen so i'm wondering if it is a sept of clan donald? Thanks for your help!

Your picture appears to show the shield and motto.  We need a better picture of the crest if you want it identified.  It is not clear from your photograph that there is a crest on top of the shield.

Or am I confused and you actually want the shield identified.

Here's some Clan Donald stuff on the shield which we in our ignorance referred to as a crest.  ;D

The motto, "By Sea & Land", looks kosher but I don't recognise the shield,  the 50/50 thing looks a bit English to me?

Thanks everyone so far. Sorry I do mean, identify the shield. I'm thinking it might be a wedding / merging of two families?

Hi,

The left side (as we see it) looks like Alexander: "Per pale argent and sable a chevron and in base a crescent all counterchanged".  (See "Earl of Caledon" or "Alexander of Tunis" for examples)
The Alexanders are descended from Clan Donald and have kept the same motto.

I'm having trouble identifying the arms on the right, can anybody work out what the three devices on the fess are ??

Hi again,
After a bit more digging I reckon the other half (right hand side as we see it) is a Weaver family relative. Or a fess azure double cotised gules, 2 garbs or  is one version of this and it is quite likely that the charges and (perhaps) the colours have been changed to signify descent.

So your engraving may represent an Alexander/ Weaver marriage, possibly in Ireland.

Do the silver marks on the item give you any clue to date ?

Regards,

The charges on the fess look like 3 heads, erased?

Gryphon? Bird? Eagle?

KG,  gryphons could be right. The motto also is almost that of the Royal Marines & the French Marines.
