The only Charles Swan(n) born Suffolk around 1852/53 was married to Emily and living in Oxford on both the 1891 and 1901 censuses

Please give full details of where you have found your Charles in the North East in 1891/1901

OP is assuming he has changed his name to Charles Wood   :-\

Shame the second marriage was in a registry office as the signature on the certificate you have won't be his.  You could have compared how he signs his first name with Charles Swanns marriage in Manchester.

Sorry would have included it if I realised. Was just hoping to get some help with the records for the workhouse because I know these can sometimes give insights into their circumstances with reference to payments made to them etc, was hoping for some reference as to why they were there. Thanks for looking everyone. Kind regards x

There are some very informative pages about workhouses in the UK which generally tell what information is available.
This is the Newmarket one  http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Newmarket/
However it states
Records
Suffolk Record Office, 77 Raingate Street, Bury St Edmunds IP33 2AR. Very few local records survive
It may be worth contacting them to see if they have anything for this period.
