As far as I can see, there do not seem to be any records online for Chichester and Brighton that will give me more information about Catherine's family. She was baptised at St Pancras Chichester on Dec 21 1801 and was the daughter of Isaac Young and Catherine; the couple had a daughter called Catherine baptised at St Pater on 15 Oct 1796. If anyone has access to images of these records I should be happy to know more, if they are helpful enough to give any further information about the couple. As I live in the Manchester area I would have great difficulty in getting there early enough to look at the PRs in the Archives and get home again the same day.
My Catherine Young then married John Lutman at St Nicholas Brighton on 11 June 1827. I know the records for East Sussex are not in the same place as those for Chichester.

If all else fails you could view the marriage at your local LDS family history centre but may have to order in the film
St. Nicholas' Church, Brighton,
Marriages, 1816-1828
Family History Library
British Film 1067115

the films with the baptisms are also available

Thanks, Rosie.
It is not easy to get to my nearest FHC either. I was hoping that there is someone who goes to the archives who can add it to their "to do" list.

Hi, I can't get to the records office for you but have found records of the 2 baptisms online. It's a bit confusing that they have 2 children named Catherine as I can find no record of the death of the first Catherine.

I found other children for them baptised at St Pancras, Chichester....
Mary       1798
Elizabeth 1804
Charles    1806

I have also checked the 2 marriages and the info is...

Isaac Young married Katherine Couzens at St Andrew, Chichester on 4th February 1793.
The record stated that they were both of this parish and the witness was Geo Gatchause Gatton

John Lutman married Katherine Young at St Nicholas, Brighton on 11th June 1827.
The record states John was a batchelor and Katherine a spinster, both of this parish.

I know you really wanted someone to check the original records but thought I would post in the hopes I've found something you didn't already know  :)
Best wishes HL

Thanks, HL. I did not have that witness's name, though it raises other questions! So, I still hope for someone to see the originals - or images, anyway - to see if it tells me more about Isaac's address and/or occupation, or the witnesses and other details at his marriage to Katherine Couzens.

I think it's likely that the original parish record contains no more info than was on the source I used Jacqueline. However it would be great if someone can get to the Records Office to check for you.

Present day Marriage Certificates are more informative in terms of addresses, father's names and occupations  :)
Best wishes HL

With pre 1837 PRs, it's a question of getting lucky for additional details especially for marriages, but sometimes baptism records give a bit more, though just a father's name is a cruel and unusual punishment ......so I still hope. It's a long and expensive journey by train from my home.

Hi,

There's nothing else on the Lutman marriage - on the Isaac Young the only addition to what Hampshire Lass has given you is that the witnesses could be Geo GATCHOUS (?) and E GATTON.  Gatton is a common Sussex name but I can't work out what the other one is!  :o

I live near The Keep (ESRO) and go often, so PM me if there's anything you want me to look up - but I won't be there for a couple of weeks now because of work.  :'(

That's a kind offer, Liz. I shall take you up on it, for the baptisms of their children in hopes of further info. I'll pm with names, dates and churches. I have already waited about 15 years so a fortnight(ish) is no hardship. Thanks.
