Athalstan Corbet Marshal. Baptism 17 Feb 1827, Towyn.
« on: Thursday 29 January 15 19:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I can find no info at all about his parents, Thomas Marshal and Matilda Livermore.

Athalstan was baptised 17 Feb 1827 in Towyn, Merionethshire.
The family may have emigrated to Natal, South Africa at a later date as Athalstan married a girl called Susannah Russell.
I have some info about their family being shipwrecked on a trip to South Africa, near Durban, on 4 July 1850, when Susannah was 15 years old.
Many thanks for any help.

Hi

It looks like he was older, than the 1827 Baptist record

I have baptism as 1827 from the Baptist record and failed to realise it was unlikely to be close to his date of birth. His Marriage record suggests birth in 1816. This probably makes sense because, as I understand it, Baptists do not have infant baptisms. They baptise believers by immersion, in a similar way to confirmation in C of E.

I wonder if the age listed on his marriage cert was an error and he was actually 10 years younger - although the image is clear :-\

There is a second bapt (or rather receiving into the church) for the Athalstan bapt in Towyn at the Baptist Church in Croydon 1836 and the image mentioned his previous bapt in Towyn and birth on 27 Jan 1827.   Father Thomas is listed as a W I Merchant?? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NYJ3-YLV

Yes - I also saw that tree  - They are together in Croydon in 1851 with Matilda  widowed and no Athalstan

I think this is the family in 1841 - again in Croydon  All not born in County

Elizabeth    Marshal 40    School M??
Mary Marshal 20
Athelstan    Marshal 15
Thos    Marshal     13

At the time of her marriage to Charles Compton in 1852 1859 Eliza Mary lists her father as Thomas Marshall Gentleman
