As Athalstan was born and baptised on Towyn I wonder if he was named after Athelstan Corbet of Ynysymaengwyn, Tywyn/Towyn??   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ynysymaengwyn

I also wondered about the Ynysmaengwyn link but nothing shows on the pedigrees or the Corbet memorials in the church.

I can't find a baptism for Thomas Marshall of the right period but there are some earlier in the century:-

Thomas Marshall, son of John, baptised in Tywyn on 22nd February 1718

William Marshall (Gulielmus Morshall), son of Thomas and Martha, baptised in Tywyn on 12th May 1717

Sorry I haven't thanked Kaye99, dcbnwh and MargP for help, as I have been having computer problems after someone sent me an 'infected' message. I have had to reset various passwords!!
The info about his death saying he was 29 when he died ties in with the original baptism date.
I have now managed to track him to his death in Orange Free State, South Africa.
