Help please to find 'lost' Ffestiniog family
« on: Thursday 29 January 15 19:47 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find any trace of John & Ellen Roberts after 1871 and would be grateful for any help as they seem to have disappeared, despite my extensive and fruitless searching!
In 1871, John (1836), Ellen (1828) and their daughter, 'Maria L Roberts'(1868), were living at 'Cefn Pantycelin, Ffestiniog'. Also there was Margaret Hughes (1850), who was Ellen's daughter from her first marriage to John Hughes.
All the family were born in Ffestiniog district, apart from John Roberts, born in Liverpool.
Possibly not helping are the variations that appear in Ellen's name, i.e. Ellin, Elinor, Ellenor.
I don't imagine that they had all died by 1871, at least I hope not!

Hi JJen
Thanks for your quick reply. Although 'Maria's' details look good on their own, unfortunately I have no other relevant Williams or Davies's in my tree.

Could this be 'Maria's' baptism?

If so perhaps we need to look for Mary Lane Roberts.

Thanks JJen, something to go on! Looks like 1871 an error.

Hi JJen
Just dug out the baptism register copy of that baptism and, sadly, the parents are wrong! Also, the register shows name as 'Mary Jane'.
But thanks again

Hi
Quick reply:
Have traced a Mariah Louisa Hughes, born Ffestiniog, age 43 in 1911 Census, married to David Hughes, living in Porthmadog. In 1901 she's Mariah Davies, age 32, in the Workhouse at Penrhyndeudraeth, widow, with son Willie Walter Davies, age 2; he's with her 1911 age 12.
1911 Census says present marriage has lasted 24yrs, had 13 children, 6 alive, 7 died. It appears years of marriage figure does not refer to 'present' marriage, as she's a widow in 1901 Census.
There's a marriage 1894 Maria Roberts to John Davies, Festiniog Registration District, and a marriage in 1905, again Festiniog, Maria Davies (nee Roberts) to David Hughes.
Will be away all day tomorrow, Wednesday and Friday, so won't have time to send further details for some time . If you send me your e-mail address by Personal Message, I'll forward link to the Census pages. If you don't have a subscription with Ancestry it will allow you free access provided you use the link within 10 days.
