Hi,
Anyone able to read/recognise the place of birth on this Llanbrybmair register of 1893? May be Wynnstay ...........?
Son William Thomas born to parents John & Sarah Elizabeth Edwards - the father was a policeman  before marriage, later farmed in Llanyblodwel.

On a modern day map there is a Wynnstay House B and B in Llanbrynmair

Thanks, it may well be Wynnstay House. Is anyone able to see if there's a baptism entry for his brother Edward Edwards (registered Q2, 1895 also at Machynlleth) who may well have been born in the same place?

the records are clearer for Edward, baptised 9 June 1895 to John and Sarah Elizabeth of Wynnstay Hamlet, John is listed as a Police Constable

There are other baptisms for children with different parents also described as living at Wynnstay Hamlet, so must describe a collection/row of houses?

Hi,
I never thought of Hamlet - though I wan't happy with House so thanks for that. Wynnstay House B&B said there 'used to be an Edwards family running the shop there' but that's not very precise.

I just tried

into Google and found at: http://static.powys.gov.uk/uploads/media/M_QS_bi_01.pdf  dated 1887 to 1897 covering the dates of the births

"Agreements for letting of premises to the Clerk of the Peace: police station, Penybontfawr, p. Pennant 1879; a house in Llansanffraid, 1881; a cottage in Cemais (c.1882); a cottage in Wynnstay hamlet, p. Llanbrynmair, 1882, referred to in covering letter as a constables cottage; a messuage in Churchstoke, 1887. Possibly all were police stations or houses."

So it seems as if the Clerk of the Peace was paying rent for the house in Wynnstay Hamlets for Constable John Edwards and his family. Still not sure exactly where it is though.
1882 the date given above for the Wynnstay Hamlet was the year John and Sarah Elizabeth got married. Maybe this is upgrading a single-man from, say, lodging somewhere, to a family house?

Linking back to the previous post by catfordcrooner, and Winnstay House being the former post office, a search for Wynnstay Hamlet in the free to view Welsh Newspapers online, brings up a number of articles which locate the post office and the Wynnstay Hotel as being in the hamlet.

Also, listed in the parish baptisms for 1897 is a child of another police constable - Hugh Jones, also listed as residing at Wynnstay Hamlet.

Welsh Newspapers on Line delivered 10 hits on Wynnstay Hamlet and logic would suggest that it was near the settlement now on edge of A470 and near the Wynnstay Hotel. One article referred to sewage from Wynnstay Hamlet running into a field belonging to the Wynnstay Hotel.  But logic has no place in genealogy

I found something that said with the coming of a new toll road and the railway the community focus moved from llanbrynmair and its church to Wynnstay Hamlet 2 miles to the north.
