George Riley (1809) census look up.
« on: Saturday 31 January 15 05:34 GMT (UK) »
Having trouble finding census records for George Riley born 1809 in Cork. Son of William and Catherine. He would immigrate to Canada in 1830 and soon after marry Elizabeth Higginson in Pakenham Ontario. Looking for a census of the family (believed to have a brother), birth and immigration records before coming to canada. Thanks in advance.

Only the 1901 and 1911 Ireland censuses survive intact.

There are occasional finds of parts of earlier censuses, but they were mostly destroyed.

His birth is before Civil Registration, so you are dependent on Parish Registers.
And to find them, you need to know where he was born (parish, if not actual townland) and his religious denomination.

Passenger records from the UK (Ireland was then part of the UK) only exist from 1890.

Read the very helpful threads at the top of the Ireland Resources & Offers board:

My Ancestor came from Ireland - Where do I start?

Introduction to Irish Records

www.irishgenealogy.ie is the Irish Government's website.

As I said, it's important (if not essential) to have an idea of the parish (or townland) from where they came, and the religious denomination.

Have you exhausted all Canadian resources?

Irish Genalogy (www.irishgenealogy.ie) doesn't have anything in their Church Records?
These records are mainly Anglican records.

Catholic Parish Registers are available at registers.nli.ie.
But these are simply images of the pages, and there is no index.
So, you need to know in which register to look, and then browse page-by-page!
